Brianna's actions
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Advocate for Green Spaces
I will call or write 1 public officials per day to advocate for more green spaces around my town, particularly in neighborhoods that currently lack equitable access to green spaces.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Donate to or Volunteer for Low-Income Solar Initiatives
Whether it's by donating or volunteering, I will research the benefits of low-income solar and find out how I can support low-income solar initiatives in my area.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided below and spend 15 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Health
Reduce refined sugar
I will keep track and reduce my consumption of refined sugars, including sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 50 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 10-minute walk outside each day.
Community
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 1 conversations.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 10 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Brianna Torres 11/15/2020 7:13 PMPracticing gratitude reminds me that I have the support of many people, even as I get through some challenging days. I think that positivity is contagious and I think that practicing gratitude helps others also recognize their work and efforts and continues the positivity in a community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go get a check upHow do you practice self care?
Brianna Torres 11/15/2020 7:08 PMI practice self care by making sure I get ample sleep. I often work nights, and I build hours in the day time to make sure that I get the sleep that I need. I also make sure that I have Sunday mornings free and treat myself to a yummy breakfast at those times! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Brianna Torres 11/15/2020 7:06 PMI am not sure how electricity is generated where I live, but it raises the important point of the ways we can take resources for granted, and not work to understand where these resources come from and how they work. I think that this lack of education may contribute to the abuse of these resources. -
Brianna Torres 11/11/2020 5:12 PMI think it's going well! I am learning a lot from the process and I appreciate the opportunity to challenge myself in new ways every day -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Brianna Torres 11/11/2020 5:11 PMI find that walking is very peaceful! In a way, my commute offers me some "me time" in that I am able to self reflect and find small opportunities in my day to be relaxed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Brianna Torres 11/11/2020 5:09 PMI think that it is important to spread the information to our neighbors. I think that sometimes, people don't recycle because people honestly don't know how to recycle. I think that finding ways to educate the community through examples is integral to helping make the community more sustainable. It is also important for local public services are accessible and inexpensive (for example, like the services that come and pick up trash cans every week).
