Anna's actions
Transportation
Choose a Carbon Offset
If buying a plane ticket, I will also buy a carbon offset.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Health
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 60 minute(s)
Community
SIGN UP TO VOTE
I will make sure I’m registered to vote. While I’m at it, I’ll sign up to help others register too!
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 15 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 2 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 2 conversations.
Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community while observing best practices in my region for not spreading COVID-19.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 30 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Learn About Renewable EnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Anna Ugast 11/30/2020 2:59 PMFossils need to be phrased out because they are not sustainable. Alternative forms of renewable energy will help reduce GHG emissions over time. -
Anna Ugast 11/28/2020 4:50 PMI picked up trash near Diamond Head Lighthouse. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Anna Ugast 11/28/2020 4:48 PMBy telling people how much paper and CO2 can be avoided by printing two-sided. Companies should definitely encourage it in the workplace. I would save people money in the long run. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Engage In Active ListeningWhat was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?
Anna Ugast 11/28/2020 4:45 PMI got a different perspective of things. I would not have thought that way on my own without having the conversations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Anna Ugast 11/28/2020 4:44 PMLimiting my social media usage encourages me to do other things. I am more productive when I am not constantly checking Instagram and Snapchat. It was not hard to limit the time on the apps. I even deleted my twitter. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Join An Outdoor ProjectHow well do you know the area you stay in -- whether your hometown or your campus community? In what ways is a deep knowledge of your surroundings -- known as a 'sense of place' -- important to you?
Anna Ugast 11/28/2020 4:39 PMAfter more than 3 years, I still use GPS to get around the island. It is good to know what is around you for activities and adventures. I like to see the organisms that inhabit the island where I go in nature. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Anna Ugast 11/27/2020 11:20 AMMany items purchased do not look like raw materials. Ground beef in plastic is not called cow's flesh. People do not think how it gets to the store with animal cruelty behind closed doors, GHG emissions, and habitat destruction. I buy items that are not in plastic when I can. Local vegetables and fruits are often not. Down to Earth has staples for bulk buying. The processed foods are normally packaged. I do not buy many items for my house or car because minimalism is good for the planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Anna Ugast 11/27/2020 11:08 AMThe outdoors has many sounds, smells, and sights. Exercising has shown improve or maintain memory capability. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn More about Food ApartheidWhat can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Anna Ugast 11/22/2020 11:22 AMWithout nutritious food, a decline in health is likely. Bad health can lead to expensive health bills and medication. Hungry children often have a hard time focusing in school. Access to nutritious food allow people to think about things, ideas, or goals and increase engagement in social events. -
