Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or organize car sharing with my neighbors or classmates to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Johanna Vazquez 11/02/2020 9:47 AMa lot of people flush things down the toilet that leads to the sewer causing it to be blocked out. Making it harder to reclean the water supply. Another thing is people don't clean up after themselves and litter which always leads to end up in the ocean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Johanna Vazquez 11/02/2020 9:45 AMI will reduce waste, reuse a water bottle or bags, refuse in plastic bags, repair any old clothes with rips, repurpose paper and make new paper out of it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Johanna Vazquez 11/02/2020 9:42 AMI will try to remember to bring a reusable bag and even have a couple reusable bags in my car in case I forget. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Johanna Vazquez 11/02/2020 9:41 AMI try to always finish what I eat or made but sometimes the leftovers aren't eaten when stored in the fridge. Thats when a lot of waste is thrown out. I will use my compost to bring to my parents garden. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Johanna Vazquez 11/02/2020 9:40 AMcardboard boxes, glass, plastic, cans, and paper. Plastic bags are not recyclable. The most difficult is figuring out what is recyclable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Car ShareTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (school, work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
