Janice 's actions
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Simplicity
Track my Purchases
I will spend 15 minutes each day maintaining a record of all my purchases and learning about my spending habits.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Janice Watts 7/02/2020 6:01 AMTraveling this last week has been difficult. I never realized how much plastic is in an airport and what we purchase. I'm glad that I remembered my reusable water bottle and coffee cup.-
Professor Morrell 7/02/2020 10:04 AMAll the one use items are crazy right?! I cant wait for sustainability to hit the airline industry! High five for bringing your water bottles! I usually bring my own tea too and get hot water and its the best thing to sip on a plane!

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Track my PurchasesWhat have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?
Janice Watts 6/25/2020 5:15 PMI notice that I spend a lot of extra money on coffee on days that I work. I think buying a small coffee pot to take to work might be a good investment for not only me but everyone at the store.-
Professor Morrell 6/30/2020 11:32 PMYou might want to look into pour over coffee too! :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Janice Watts 6/25/2020 5:14 PMI think you need to be creative with the things you've already purchased in order to avoid having to spend money on buying new stuff. -
Janice Watts 6/11/2020 10:54 AMWe are almost out of toothpaste and laundry detergent so I found the companies Bite and Earth Breeze that provide sustainable alternatives for these items. I order these things and I am looking forward to them being delivered!-
Professor Morrell 6/14/2020 3:41 PMThats awesome! 1 product at a time!

Janice Watts 5/21/2020 1:51 PMI never knew how much CO2 could have been saved by simply turning my computer off all the way when I was done with it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Janice Watts 5/21/2020 1:44 PMSDGE has sent out letters suggesting for us to switch most of our energy use to earlier in the day. Remembering to turn out lights and unplug things like lamps and phone chargers from the wall is important to reduce your daily amount of energy use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Janice Watts 5/18/2020 9:39 AMSomething I already do is unplugging things like small kitchen appliances and lamps when I am no using them. Also, making sure to keep the lights off if it is not necessary for them to be on. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Janice Watts 5/11/2020 8:17 PMI like to go on walks with my neighbors who have pets. That way I get to enjoy the company of my neighbors as well as see a dog daily!
