Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

So far this week I am working to cut back on my water usage, which i find is actually not as hard as i thought it would be. Once i started to notice how much water I was wasting for no real reason, I found it easy to just turn the tap on/off more often instead of letting it run. I feel that over a long period of time this amount of water will add up to a lot. Cutting back on a meat also has been going well. I have been trying to got meat less at least 1 2 times a week for dinner. Which doesn't sound like much, but over a long period of time i feel the difference will show.

I've found that saving water seemed to get easier as time went on because I realized how much water I was wasting doing absolutely nothing. As far as the meat, I grew up eating meat (beef) almost every day--because we live on a dairy farm and it was readily available and cheap. For me, it's been difficult to limit it more, but skipping it 1 or 2 times a week definitely makes a difference!

I find it somewhat rewarding trying to limit the amount of packing I get with the things i buy. When i went to the store this week I tried to avoid buying things that had unneeded packing, but still found that a vast majority of the things i got where in single use packaging. Which is very very hard to avoid...

Yes, it’s a huge challenge. It usually requires cooking more with whole food ingredients. Maybe our field trip Tuesday will give you ideas.
