Jennifer's actions
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Help Others
I will offer to help 1 person(s) who are in need each day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 5 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Meet My Neighbors
I will meet 1 new neighbor(s) each day.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 5 minutes using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Food
Advocate for More Food Options
I will advocate for local and/or organic food options at work or on campus.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

Jennifer White 4/15/2021 9:11 AMI initially joined this challange to support my sorority, and I am happy to say that I am leaving it with new sustainable habits that help the environment. This experience has helped me become more concsious of how my personal every day actions can affect the environment.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Jennifer White 3/29/2021 8:47 PMI can thrift more by purchasing items from second-hand stores, and upcycle my clothing. I can alter my old clothes I don't wear anymore into new pieces by cropping them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Jennifer White 3/29/2021 8:45 PMThis makes me feel happy that I can make an adjustment like this to better my environment. The next step I will take to reduce my waste is taking my notes for class digitally on my computer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Jennifer White 3/29/2021 8:43 PMWhat concerns me most is how we are affecting our climate and air with our pollution. Our planet continues to grow warmer, melting and destroying habitats of our wildlife. In terms of local affects to our planet, trash in the streets of the community is concerning to me. Our town is beautiful, and garbage and waste detracts from that. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Jennifer White 3/29/2021 8:25 PMI think leaving some reusable bags in my car will help me lessen my disposable bag usage. If I somehow forget one, putting my items directly into my cart and pushing it to my car is not a big hassle. That could be my alternative. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Take ControlHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Jennifer White 3/29/2021 8:21 PMEnvironmental health directly affects community health. The more we pollute the environment, the less natural resources are available for all organisms. Pollution of the ocean can affect the health and food supply of our food such as sea creatures. The excessive use of paper wastes trees, and we need their CO2 to live. Cutting down on pollution makes for a cleaner community overall. My personal health is boosted by default when I do things to better the community I am apart of. When I choose to eat at home instead of eating unhealthy fast food to lessen my disposable waste contribution, I am also bettering the health of my body. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Jennifer White 3/29/2021 8:14 PMWhen its just a couple small items here and there, its hard to see how much that waste can pile up. I stored my garbage in my car for the whole day to see how much unrecycleable waste added up and it was more than I expected. The ease of making a simple purchase in a disposable container seems to often outweigh even the thought of turning to more environmentally friendly options instead. Taking note of my own waste contribution has given me a better idea of where I'm at. Now I can work on ways to improve and weaken my personal footprint
