Help Others
I will offer to help 1 person(s) who are in need each day.
Action Track: Building Resilience

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Lauren Williams 3/20/2021 2:24 PMHonestly, I don't really have a specific fashion; I usually just wear the same jeans every day until I grow out of them (I know, I'm gross) and I wear the same shoes until they get holes in them. So, by rarely buying new clothes, I am both saving money and helping the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Lauren Williams 3/20/2021 2:21 PMI usually get about 6 or 7 hours of sleep, which isn't bad, but is definitely something I could improve upon. It's difficult being a night owl and having an 8am every day, but I suppose winding down for longer before bed would help me fall asleep faster. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Lauren Williams 3/20/2021 2:18 PMI would love to say that I will use the money I save to donate to important causes, but I have to pay for college before my philanthropic pursuits, so that's likely where my money will go. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity SIGN UP TO VOTEWhy is voting important to creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world? In what other ways can you actively participate in important decision-making?
Lauren Williams 3/20/2021 2:17 PMVoting is so so so important in a democracy, but often, people can forget about the plights of the environment in favor of the right of humans, which is obviously a noble pursuit in and of itself, but the environment needs some love too! By voting for people who actively support sustainability, I can help to ensure the future of our lovely planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support Businesses Owned by People of ColorA recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?
Lauren Williams 3/20/2021 2:11 PMAs with any product or service that is touched by industrialization, the larger, more funded, and more efficient business will always end up beating out the local business unless the citizens actively choose to support their local, smaller businesses. This same theme is true of food, wherein the small farmer will eventually be bought out by the likes of Monsanto, unless locals, using the concepts of food sovereignty and of supporting local business, halt the pattern. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Help OthersIn your opinion, how do social inequalities diminish a strong sense of community?
Lauren Williams 3/20/2021 2:07 PMThe perceived differences between us can often tear us apart, as it can be hard to relate to people who have had different experiences that we do.
