  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Alisa Wright's avatar
    Alisa Wright 4/26/2021 6:31 PM
Our landfills are located in Bloomington and Clinton.  I live right in the middle so it really depends on what it is as to where it goes.  I think that they affect everyone really but definitely the people that live closer to the areas.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

We switched to paperless billing on almost everything and it feels great.  I didn't even realize how much stuff we just tossed in the garbage!  We now recycle the paper that we do still get...we purchased a shredder and shred it first and then put it in recycling.

My email is way easier to keep track of than paper bills. I still have one bill that won’t go electronically.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Work from Home
It takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. How have you used technology to replace in-person meetings or work this year?

    Alisa Wright 4/26/2021 6:28 PM
I have the option to work from home which was awesome during the Covid shutdowns.  I still had to go into the office about once a week to get my payroll checks printed for clients, but was able to do most everything from home.  I still work from home pretty often.  It saves me money for daycare when my kids are out of school and it saves money in gas.

I think many of us are seeing the benefits of working from home. I think post-pandemic is going to be very different.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

    Alisa Wright's avatar
    Alisa Wright 4/26/2021 6:25 PM
We drove to Oxford Mississippi for a wedding.  It was such a long drive and would have been so much faster by plane but honestly...we enjoyed the drive.  We got to see many sites that we would not have seen by air and stopped at some awesome landmarks along the way.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Alisa Wright's avatar
    Alisa Wright 4/26/2021 6:23 PM
By walking out in the country where I live I get to enjoy the animals and the weather.  It makes me happy to see the birds flying and the squirrels and rabbits running!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Take Control
How do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?

    Alisa Wright's avatar
    Alisa Wright 4/26/2021 6:21 PM
If your overall healthy and happy your more likely to be out in the community doing things that will better the community and the environment as a whole.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health Go get a check up
How do you practice self care?

    Alisa Wright's avatar
    Alisa Wright 4/26/2021 6:20 PM
I practice self care by taking a little time for myself once a week.  My husband will take care of the kids and I will go get my nails done, or go have lunch with a friend, or even just a nice hot bath with a glass of wine and a book to relax.  It is a nice way to just have a little me time in between work, school, kids, practices, games, farm, and house.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

    Alisa Wright's avatar
    Alisa Wright 4/26/2021 6:19 PM
I try to get 8 hours,  But sleep and restful sleep are not the same.  I am working on relaxing before bed and taking a warm shower to help me relax.  I find that being relaxed helps me get a more restful sleep instead of being on the go then straight to bed.  I tend to still be very tired if I go to bed like that,
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Know My health
How do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?

    Alisa Wright's avatar
    Alisa Wright 4/26/2021 6:17 PM
I have always struggled with depression and anxiety stemming from some traumatic events in my life.  But I am learning how to deal with the complex root problems instead of band-aiding them with meds.  Meds are ok and they do help but I have learned that it is just a Band-Aid to the bigger problem and that If I can learn to cope with that problem then perhaps I won't needs the meds anymore.  At least that is my hope!  I try to help others by always being there for them and always listening and letting them know that they are never alone.

Sounds like showing up for others works to show up for yourself too. And it helps you understand others when you think “oh this anger isn’t really about not finding my car keys.”
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Visit A Local Farm
How do our current food growing and manufacturing processes affect our future and the future of Earth?

    Alisa Wright's avatar
    Alisa Wright 4/26/2021 6:13 PM
I do not buy packaged meat if I can help it at all.  We don't know what conditions those animals were living in and what was injected into them.  I know that when we eat out we are eating unknown food.  But at home we eat the pork and chicken that we produce, and the beef that our neighbor produces.  I also grow a lot of our own vegetables and some fruits and of course our chicken eggs.   I much prefer knowing the conditions that the animals lived in and what if anything they were injected with.  Plus the fresh from our farm meat tastes so much better...perhaps it's jus the hard work that goes into it.

Knowing where your food comes from makes a huge difference in how confident you are in eating it.
