    Growing your own herbs is a great way to cut down on the energy and resources used in large-scale agriculture as well as a wonderful opportunity to begin learning about and practicing sustainable food production.

    I have to take out the trash a lot less often than I did when we didn't have a compost bin.

    Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

    Curing foods in salt is a great way to introduce new flavor profiles into common foods as well as eliminate food waste. The process is essentially waste free as curing salts can be dehydrated, stored, and used again!

    What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    I use K cups. I could stop doing that if I got one of the reusable things that lets you put coffee grounds into the K cup thing.

    Missouri gets most of its water from rivers, lakes, and aquifers.

    It's hard to keep up with all the challenges for a long time. It was easy at the beginning but it's getting harder now.

    The majority of electricity in Missouri is generated from coal, and coal mining is very terrible for the both the workers and the environment.
