Cecilia's actions
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Community
Talk To My Friends and Classmates
I will decide which social or environmental issue in my community is most important to me and tell 1 friends and/or classmates each day about the issue.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Community
Host A Watch Party
I will host a watch party to screen a documentary about an issue that matters to me.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 60 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 15 minute(s) each day.
Create Your Own Action
Line dry my clothes
My goal is to use less the dryer machine when doing laundry.
Participant Feed

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Talk To My Friends and ClassmatesWhat makes you feel connected to your campus, your neighbors, or another kind of community in your life?
Cecilia Alcantar 11/07/2019 8:09 PMToday I went out to eat with my friends, and one of us said we didn't need straws. Our waitress asked if it was because we were trying to save the turtles, and I gave him a speech saying that it was not only the turtles but also our environment, oceans and ourselves. We all used our reusable straws and he said he was starting to think about getting one too. Then when our food came out and we realized we didn't have silverware so I pulled out my bamboo utensils and when our waitress saw it he said, you are really insane, I've never seen something like this.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Cecilia Alcantar 10/26/2019 2:11 PMToday I went to marshalls with a coworker, she went to buy a present and a bag to put it in and I got three pairs of jeans. When we went up to register to pay I refused to take a plastic bag and I forgot my reusable bag, so I just carried them on my hands. She got her stuff in a plastic bag and as we went out she said "so you are really not using plastic bags anymore" and I said yes, this is no joke. I told to her that if I was her I would've put the present in the bag she bought so that way I wouldn't need the single-use plastic one. I told her I was not judging her, but instead that it was ok, we are so use to single use plastic bags that it is hard to stop using them.
I used to forget all the time my reusable bag and instead just grab a plastic one. Now if that happens, I just grab all the stuff I buy in my hands. That way I avoid grabbing plastic bags and buying stuff I really dont need because I don't have enough hands to carry them. 😅-

Cecilia Alcantar 10/03/2019 7:15 PMWhen I lived in mexico, I used to wash my clothes by hand and it was always with cold water(during winter it was worse). I didn't realize that was washing my clothes with warm or hot water because that's how the washer is set.
I'm going to do my best and always switch to cold or regular temperd water to do my laundry.
