Stephanie 's actions
Simplicity
Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Simplicity
Mindfulness Practice
I will spend 10 minute(s) per day practicing Mindfulness.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home or dorm room.
Simplicity
Go For A Daily Walk Outside
I will take a walk outside for 10 minutes each day.
Simplicity
Work-Life Balance
I will not work more than 8 hour days each day to practice work-life balance.
Simplicity
Track my Purchases
I will spend 5 minutes each day maintaining a record of all my purchases and learning about my spending habits.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 15 minutes using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Action Track: Building Resilience
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 15 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go For A Daily Walk OutsideFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Stephanie Andersen 10/19/2021 6:14 AMI have enjoyed adding a quick walk to my day. It helps me process the morning and plan for my afternoon. I feel refreshed and focused in the afternoon compared to before I started the routine. I plan to keep this routine even after the EcoChallange is over. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Work-Life BalanceHow might practicing work-life balance lead to a more sustainable life for yourself? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Stephanie Andersen 10/15/2021 12:15 PMBy shutting off my work brain at home, I am able to be more present with my family which "fills my bucket" That makes me more productive and focused at work. Its a win-win for both environments. Work-life balance is important to sustainability because it helps people be more productive at work and prevents burn out. We can't take care of our students and build up the next generation of workers if we aren't here to do the job. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Core ValuesWhat are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?
Stephanie Andersen 10/07/2021 12:14 PMMy core values are kindness, compassion and relationships. I believe kindness and compassion can shape our reactions to people and help us love others for who they are. By being kind we treat others how we want to be treated. With compassion, we see the best in people and are willing to listen to their story instead of seeing their faults. I also value relationships as I want to feel connected to those around me whether they are friends or family. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Stephanie Andersen 10/06/2021 2:17 PMI need to call my bank and get my statements electronically. They used to but one day it switched and I started getting them. With it being online, I don't need a paper copy. This is a good reminder to finally get going and call. I've been saying for months that I'm going to do it. -
Stephanie Andersen 10/05/2021 2:28 PMHas anyone included their family in the Eco Challenge? We modified it, but made it a family challenge/competition - House Cup style for those of you who are Harry Potter Fans. We get 5 points for doing something kind for each other. We lose point for things like leaving a light on, letting the water run or leaving a door open.-
Casey Meehan 10/06/2021 1:41 PMI LOVE this idea! Thanks for sharing, Stephanie!
