Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

Automobiles drip oil onto the ground that then lead into rivers and oceans when it rains so by not using a car as often I can help reduce the runoff that goes into the ocean.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Drew Austin's avatar
    Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:56 PM
I can substitute shampoo bottles with bars instead.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    Drew Austin's avatar
    Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:55 PM
There are not a lot of barriers. Using a brita filter can enhance the taste and make sure it is clean for me to drink.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Drew Austin's avatar
    Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:54 PM
I can repurpose old things like curtains or plastic products to accessorize without wasting it and buying new clothes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

    Drew Austin's avatar
    Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:52 PM
We do not see how much waste we produce in a day or week and we do not see where it ends up. I will be more mindful with the waste products I can avoid.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:51 PM
Aloha waste of honolulu will come and pick bulky things up to be recycled or disposed of in the correct way.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Tour A Waste Management Facility
Field trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you tour? What did you learn?

    Drew Austin's avatar
    Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:49 PM
Aloha waste of honolulu and I learned that we do not need to separate our recycling because they will do that for us.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Drew Austin's avatar
    Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:46 PM
A lot of them are in Waimanalo which is not a touristy spot so it is affecting the natives who live there who already are struggling to pay to live where they do.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Drew Austin's avatar
    Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:44 PM
The mindset of people is what concerns me the most. If somebody does not think we are destroying the planet, then they will not make any changes to their life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Support Pollution Reduction
What environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?

    Drew Austin's avatar
    Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:42 PM
The waste we pump into the ocean affects the water quality in certain areas by making it worse which affects the wildlife.
