Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 10 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.

Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
LEARN ABOUT TRANS, FEMME, AND NONBINARY EXPERIENCES
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the experiences of trans, femme, and/or nonbinary people.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community

Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community

What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 10 minutes using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 15 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 8 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Water
Use Reusable Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:57 PMAutomobiles drip oil onto the ground that then lead into rivers and oceans when it rains so by not using a car as often I can help reduce the runoff that goes into the ocean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:55 PMThere are not a lot of barriers. Using a brita filter can enhance the taste and make sure it is clean for me to drink. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:54 PMI can repurpose old things like curtains or plastic products to accessorize without wasting it and buying new clothes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:52 PMWe do not see how much waste we produce in a day or week and we do not see where it ends up. I will be more mindful with the waste products I can avoid. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:51 PMAloha waste of honolulu will come and pick bulky things up to be recycled or disposed of in the correct way. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Tour A Waste Management FacilityField trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you tour? What did you learn?
Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:49 PMAloha waste of honolulu and I learned that we do not need to separate our recycling because they will do that for us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITESIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:46 PMA lot of them are in Waimanalo which is not a touristy spot so it is affecting the natives who live there who already are struggling to pay to live where they do. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:44 PMThe mindset of people is what concerns me the most. If somebody does not think we are destroying the planet, then they will not make any changes to their life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Drew Austin 11/30/2020 6:42 PMThe waste we pump into the ocean affects the water quality in certain areas by making it worse which affects the wildlife.
