Elizabeth's actions

Energy

Online Energy Audit

I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Compost Food Waste

I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

COMPLETED -1
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Prevent Recycling Contamination

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Use a Reusable Mug

I will avoid sending disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

COMPLETED 0

I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Reduce Animal Products

I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.

As this challenge comes to an end for me I am kinda sad, but I know that it has helped me become a better person.

    Energy Online Energy Audit
What most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint? What changes did you make or will you make?

I think I was the most surprised by the actual amount of energy I use. I have always tried to do things like turn the lights off, but I have realized it is so much more than that.

My challenge is going great! I haven't used a single straw since starting this challenge
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

    Elizabeth Beroske's avatar
    Elizabeth Beroske 10/22/2019 2:29 PM
I have found that it is a lot easier to recycle here than it was at home. Most things I get to just put my recyclables in the refuse and then the people at ATM takes care of it. At home I had to take it to the recycling center myself.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Elizabeth Beroske's avatar
    Elizabeth Beroske 10/22/2019 2:11 PM
The single use item I use the most is to go boxes. I could use my own Tupperware containers instead.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Elizabeth Beroske's avatar
    Elizabeth Beroske 10/22/2019 2:10 PM
I feel like I incorporate this in my life style by refusing single use plastic as much as I can. For example I use a reusable water bottle and don't use plastic straws.
