Madison's actions
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 30-minute walk outside each day.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 60 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Transportation
Walk Instead
I will walk 5 mile(s) each day instead of driving and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 45 minute(s) each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Walk InsteadHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
Madison Clarke 11/24/2018 10:20 PMI do not feel this applies to me because since I do not have a car. I usually walk or run everywhere I can, but if it is long distance I will either take the bus or ask a friend to drive. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Madison Clarke 11/19/2018 10:10 PMI believe we have more access to meat than in other places and it is part of our way of eating. Educating others on the risks of eating meat can help to shift our meat-focused culture. We can stop making meat more accessible in most places and replace it with other options. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Madison Clarke 11/19/2018 10:08 PMYou get to be up close with nature or people in your community. When driving you don't get the chance to stop and enjoy things. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Madison Clarke 11/12/2018 11:37 PMIt concerns me the people realize they are affecting the earth, but don't do anything to help. They continue to use plastic even though it is so simple not to use it. People can easily limit their use of things to help make the world a better place. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Enjoy the Sunrise/SunsetFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
Madison Clarke 11/12/2018 11:35 PMI agree. Spending time admiring the sunrise and sunset is important and helps you reflect about life. It lets you appreciate beauty in nature and makes you feel better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Madison Clarke 11/12/2018 11:33 PMIt wasn't hard because I enjoy going out and having fun outdoors rather than be in front of a screen all day. Instead I go to the beach or go on hikes/ walk around. I noticed that you don't need a phone to have fun and it will make you feel better without it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Madison Clarke 11/12/2018 11:31 PMStop buying plastic water bottles. Buy a Brita water filter and use that to save plastic. Always bring a reusable bottle like a hydro flask to use for water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Madison Clarke 10/15/2018 9:28 PMReuse any plastic in the household, if not reusing it, I can recycle it. Reduce the amount of water being used by using only what is needed, not what is wanted. Repair things that break instead of buying new ones (clothes). Repurpose old material into bags, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Madison Clarke 10/15/2018 9:26 PMIf I did not have a bag, I would use a cart to help bring things to the car, but since I do not have a car, I will ask my friends to help carry things with me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Madison Clarke 10/14/2018 11:22 PMI can ask my friends to join me on hikes or even going to the beach to swim is exercise as well. This allows me to spend time in nature and also be able to socialize with friends.
