Katrina's actions
Community
LEARN ABOUT TRANS, FEMME, AND NONBINARY EXPERIENCES
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the experiences of trans, femme, and/or nonbinary people.
Community
Host A Watch Party
I will host a watch party to screen a documentary about an issue that matters to me.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 10-minute walk outside each day.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 10 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 15 minute(s)
Energy
Use an Energy Meter
I will use an energy meter to monitor my energy use and identify opportunities to save power.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 15 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.
Transportation
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Community
Talk To My Friends and Classmates
I will decide which social or environmental issue in my community is most important to me and tell 2 friends and/or classmates each day about the issue.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Host A Watch PartyWhat did you learn about in the documentary you watched? How did it make you feel?
Katrina Cloyes 4/10/2022 12:31 PMHosting documentary-watching events through the CJR with my ambassador group has been a great way to engage in difficult conversations and discuss how we can make a change! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Katrina Cloyes 3/30/2022 3:56 PMI would like to create more space for spiritual reflection and time to make decisions regarding next year. One practice that helps me with this is yoga, but I also enjoy going to the prayer chapel. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Katrina Cloyes 3/30/2022 3:55 PMI usually use single-use from the caf and I am working on bringing Tupperware from my room. The problem with this is that it is really hard to carry it around all day and I normally don't get back to the dorm until around 9. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Drive LessHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Katrina Cloyes 3/30/2022 3:54 PMRecently, I have been challenging myself to only drive if it is absolutely necessary. I have been using my roommate's bird scooter a lot more and it also encourages me to be more intentional with my time to leave 10 mins earlier and walk. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Practice Gratitude for EarthKathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How can we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?
Katrina Cloyes 2/20/2022 1:35 PMThis challenge can feel so easy at times because I literally moved to San Diego to be in a place with warm weather and more of an ability to be outside. I definitely agree that gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation, and my outside has become a time where I can be filled up. I think that cultivating a sense of gratitude as society requires giving yourself enough time to choose what makes you grateful and letting yourself rest. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Katrina Cloyes 2/20/2022 1:32 PMI have been really enjoying this challenge because it feels much more doable than when I've felt the need to go fully vegetarian or vegan in the past. I am borderline anemic and already don't feel that I eat enough protein, so I have worried that it wouldn't work for me to stop eating meat completely. This challenge has changed my mind and helped me encourage others to choose one meatless meal every day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support Businesses Owned by People of ColorA recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?
Katrina Cloyes 2/05/2022 6:20 PMToday I went to Barrio Logan and walked abound the area for the Border Pilgrimage through the school. We went to Barrio Doggs and it was amazing! I definitely want to come back and try out more places. The Chicano park area is so full of color and beauty. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Talk To My Friends and ClassmatesWhat makes you feel connected to your campus, your neighbors, or another kind of community in your life?
Katrina Cloyes 1/26/2022 9:43 AMI feel connected to my campus because we share the same space. Talking to those around me about the content for our presentations today is a way that I will engage in the community more intentionally. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Katrina Cloyes 1/24/2022 8:30 AMThe weather is great today so I enjoyed walking from my dorm to my classes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Katrina Cloyes 1/24/2022 8:24 AMBy choosing to go off media today, I feel more at peace and able to engage with classes and friends more intentionally.
