I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 10 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.

Sarah Faulkner 4/19/2021 10:28 AMIt's the final week! I can't wait to see the amazing work we've done as a community on Friday! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Support Native CommunitiesIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Sarah Faulkner 4/14/2021 11:42 AMI think of humans as disrupting agents to most of our natural cycles and ecosystems. Humans operating under capitalist systems and Property Economy, that is. I'm reading Braiding Sweetgrass right now and it has a wonderful explanation of Gift Economy that I wish we could incorporate more into our lives. Give and take--not just take.-
Julia Chavez 4/17/2021 7:28 PMJeff Crane was just referencing this book at the farm today with a group of local high school volunteers. I want to read it, too!

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm RoomHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future?
Sarah Faulkner 4/14/2021 11:41 AMI think I need to have a better 'in the door' policy. Mainly, when something enters my apartment, it needs to have an immediate space it goes, otherwise it needs to go! I should probably get a filing system for mail, important documents, etc. I should probably also institute a 'one-in one-out' rule for clothes.... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Sarah Faulkner 4/13/2021 11:04 AMHuzzah for me, I don't eat meat at all! So much of our impact on the planet comes from beef; not only the CO2 emissions from cows, packaging, travel, but also land use change. I've learned a lot about this recently in the Food & Identity course I teach. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Sarah Faulkner 4/13/2021 11:03 AMI am vey inspired by beauty and renewal, so spring is the perfect time for me to get out and remind myself of the earth's beauty! I always think of Emerson's quote: "the earth laughs in flowers." I couldn't agree more! I feel more balanced, more peaceful and joyful, and proud of myself for doing something that brings me joy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Sarah Faulkner 4/13/2021 11:02 AMI find it fascinating that I don't walk around Seattle the same way I walked around Edinburgh. If something was two miles away in Edinburgh, I walked it! But in Seattle, even something 0.5 miles away is a drive for me (excepting around / adjacent to the lake). I think this is because I am not as interested in 'looking around' here as I was in Edinburgh. To be fair, it was far more interesting there, but I think I would notice more small shops and interesting people if I walked more.-
Julia Chavez 4/17/2021 7:36 PMOne of the positives of the COVID stay at home situation, for me, was a big uptick in walking (since I wasn't driving to work, etc. for an extended period of time). I love watching the changes in my neighbors' yards as plants flower, mature, die back, and then sprout again. There is beauty everywhere if you look! (Now I only want to walk -- if I never had to drive again I'd be just fine. :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
Sarah Faulkner 4/13/2021 11:00 AMI tend to eat slower and really enjoy taste and texture. Also, if I am not distracted or multi-tasking, I notice what I am eating. Is it processed? Pre-packaged? Could I perhaps pick a better option next time? I am far more likely to have a banana or an apple as a snack if I'm not multi-tasking / harried than I am to grab crackers or chips. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Sarah Faulkner 4/09/2021 3:30 PMI would like to consider life's mysteries a bit more--to have faith in them in the same way I've learned to have faith in the writing process. It's uncomfortable and frequently worrisome, but things do a have a way of working out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Sarah Faulkner 4/09/2021 3:29 PMIt really helps me to center myself on tangible things--to feel grateful for flowers, my pets, living close to the lake. Because my mind is so frequently full of nebulous fears, focusing on the tangible, and being grateful for it, helps alleviate my anxiety. -
Sarah Faulkner 4/09/2021 3:03 PMI am definitely falling behind on some of my daily goals, and need to make a plan for my one-time goals! I think I'll research this weekend how to have a small herb garden in my apartment!
