Lauren's actions
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Transportation
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Community
Talk To My Friends and Classmates
I will decide which social or environmental issue in my community is most important to me and tell 2 friends and/or classmates each day about the issue.
Simplicity
Mindfulness Practice
I will spend 10 minute(s) per day practicing Mindfulness.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Lauren Federico 9/21/2021 7:57 PMMost of the time I will use a reusable mug at home. However, Sometimes I will go to a coffee shop and get a single-use coffee cup. I honestly prefer the coffee I drink at home more and its more sustainable and cheaper so I should just stick with coffee at home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Lauren Federico 9/20/2021 2:12 PMI am sadly not surprised. It is much easier than you think to waste food. I rather save this extra money than waste it on uneaten food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Lauren Federico 9/20/2021 9:00 AMSometimes I will forget to bring my reusable water bottle somewhere and end up buying bottled water. I can put a reminder on my phone for me to not forget to bring my reusable water bottle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Lauren Federico 9/11/2021 12:18 PMI always forget to bring a reusable bag to the grocery store and end up using a lot of plastic bags.
