Zachary's actions
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.
Water
Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
I will avoid wasting water while waiting for the shower or sink to heat up.
Water
Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
I will save up to 15 gal (56 L) of water a day or 450 gal (1,680 L) a month by installing a low-flow showerhead.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Transportation
Conduct Virtual Meetings
I will not travel for meetings and will instead conduct them virtually.
Transportation
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Energy
Organize a Course
I will organize one of Ecochallenge.org's discussion courses, such as Powering a Bright Future, with classmate, friends, co-workers, or family.
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.
Waste
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 30 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace, dorm, or elsewhere on campus.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Conduct Virtual MeetingsHow can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?
Zachary Fern 3/30/2021 12:03 PMWith the pandemic alot of my classes are optional in person. Today i decided to go virtual to see if i could learn the same way i do in person. I felt that i was slightly less engaged in class. However, it is good that Carthage allows the option to be virtual. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Drive LessHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Zachary Fern 3/30/2021 12:00 PMI used to drive out of my way everyday on my way to campus in order to see the lake on average it adds .5 miles every trip. By adjusting that i can save a mile a day. -
Zachary Fern 3/30/2021 11:51 AMThe Eco Challenge is going well for myself and my team. I stop and ask myself questions about my habits daily and how i can adjust those habits in order to benefit the environment. Im excited for our group to get further along within the challenge as we have a few big things planned out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Zachary Fern 3/30/2021 11:48 AMThe most difficult part of recycling for me is ensuring that i get the right things into the right cans. this weekend i started a can specifically for cans in order to separate them form other recyclables. It was interesting to read about my local recycling and from what i've read we now have a schedule for recycling on our fridge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Zachary Fern 3/22/2021 8:55 AMThis is such an easy action to get into ones daily life. Every-time you go to get a drink whether its soda or coffee from Starbucks just fill it up in your waterbottle! makes me feel good knowing that i helped ensure one less item of waste is out there. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Zachary Fern 3/18/2021 2:42 AMIt is difficult switching to a reusable water bottle over disposable. It has always been so easy to just crack open a new bottle of water when i needed it. my biggest challenge is keeping my bottle full. People have told me that the taste is different but thats not my challenge... mine is ensuring that i don't reach for the case of water to defeat my laziness of refilling my britta. -
Zachary Fern 3/18/2021 2:36 AMWhy i joined Delta Upsilon and my brothers on this journey of sustainability: I started this journey because i care about my future and my future brothers lively hood. The current environment will sustain me and my current brothers but the future generations need to have the same love for those beautiful days & nights that have helped me build a bond with so many guys. With our current track those future generations wont be able to have those same experiences. The only way to ensure that they can is by our actions and corrections that we do now. Long live brotherhood and everything it can do for the environment. Dikaia
