Sophie's actions
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 60 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Nature
Keep a Nature Journal
I will journal each day about my experiences in nature.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home or dorm room.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 120 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 3 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Keep a Nature JournalWhat natural gifts are you grateful for?
Sophie Flatt 11/30/2020 6:00 PMSome natural gifts I am grateful for are the air we breathe, bodies of water which help nourish our bodies, as well as give us a fun place to play. I am also so grateful for all the plants and animals which keep our life cycle going. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Sophie Flatt 11/30/2020 5:58 PMI definitely agree with Rachel Carson, as I feel nature has helped me grown and develop tremendously. I think just being out in the fresh air and having that connection between our ecosystem and ourselves help advance our minds and bodies. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Support Businesses Owned by People of ColorA recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?
Sophie Flatt 11/30/2020 5:55 PMI think the first way to address systematic racism like the one presented would be to use your own voice to speak out about it. You can also support more minority businesses regularly, by purchasing goods and services from them instead of large chains. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Sophie Flatt 11/29/2020 11:20 AMI found replacing my screentime with other activities fairly easy. I am a huge advocate for going outside and being active, so it was fun to stop staring at a screen for a little bit each day. I mostly decided to spend my time doing physical activities such as working our, or practicing yoga, as well as some form of art. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm RoomHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future?
Sophie Flatt 11/29/2020 11:18 AMYou can prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future, but living minimal from the start. base your purchases off of a need basis and really think before buying anything. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Sophie Flatt 11/29/2020 11:17 AMcreativity is a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity because it can make you more full. Creativity is all in your head and having it can enhance you imagination and create your life so much more complex and full without ruining the simplicity. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Sophie Flatt 11/29/2020 11:15 AMBy being outside and letting fresh air reach your body, your brainpower can enhance by opening an awareness to the environment around us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Sophie Flatt 11/12/2020 3:52 PMI have always struggled with having a good sleep schedule and really have been trying to work on it. I find myself to be both a night owl, and an early riser, so it is difficult for me to get sufficient sleep, but I definitely have been better at going to bed earlier and getting a good night of sleep before getting up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Sophie Flatt 11/12/2020 3:50 PMSome single-use items I often use are straws, plastic baggies, and plastic cups. recently though, I have been more cautious on using metal straws, Tupperware containers, and I was bringing my own reusable cup when I would get a drink from many places, but because of Covid-19 many places will not accept it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Sophie Flatt 11/04/2020 7:06 PMEating more fruits and vegetables personally makes me feel better as a whole, it keeps me energized and feeling healthy. Eating natural unprocessed veggies and fruits can help keep our planet flourishing and healthy by decreasing the use of large factory based food industries.
