  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Simplicity Go For A Daily Walk Outside
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

    Olivia Forshee's avatar
    Olivia Forshee 4/20/2021 3:39 PM
It gives me an opportunity to stop straining my eyes on the screen and to get up off my couch. Being able to take in the fresh air and hear the sounds of nature is so helpful in keeping me sane in these trying times.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Tend a Garden
Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

I had a really wonderful backpacking trip to the Porcupine Mountains in the UP where I saw the Milky Way for the first time being that far from city lights, and it was truly magical.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Olivia Forshee's avatar
    Olivia Forshee 4/20/2021 3:37 PM
You are able to interact with more people and the environment than you can driving. Also, taking in fresh air feels so refreshing when I walk and helps me reset.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

    Olivia Forshee's avatar
    Olivia Forshee 4/20/2021 3:22 PM
I find that when I practice various forms of gratitude daily, that I stay more optimistic, despite all of the horrors happening in our world daily. That's not to say I'm not still affected by them, but it helps me deal with them in a hopeful way that the future will become safer and better for everyone. Also, having optimism helps me from getting depressed and anxious as easily as it used to.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Reduce refined sugar
Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?

    Olivia Forshee's avatar
    Olivia Forshee 4/20/2021 3:18 PM
I wouldn't say that I'm addicted to sugar, but I do find myself having cravings from time to time. Before I changed my diet to removed refined sugar I would have cravings all day every day, but now I think that my cravings are healthy due to their infrequency. I also only purchase sugary products when the cravings come up so that I don't have a bunch of sugary items in my kitchen at any given time! This technique has helped me so much! Right now I feel great not having sugar on a daily basis and my body has thanked me too, in helping me shed and now maintain a healthy weight!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Olivia Forshee's avatar
    Olivia Forshee 4/20/2021 3:13 PM
Meat is considered a symbol of status in some countries and the incorporation of meat into diets is seen, by many, as a healthy protein source. Also, meat is expensive, and therefore the demand for meat is higher in countries with higher socioeconomic status. Unfortunately, the raising of livestock for slaughter and sale is extremely energy and water-intensive in the ways it is done now. We need to move away from large-scale industrial agriculture raising to smaller local farms that will cut down on emissions and increase the quality of life for the livestock!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Choose Organic Ingredients
Many people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?

    Olivia Forshee's avatar
    Olivia Forshee 4/20/2021 3:10 PM
I would say that a lot of progress needs to be made to give more members of our community access to organic foods first (both in stocking stores everywhere with organic goods and also in lowering the costs to make it affordable for more families), but it is absolutely possible!!!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

    Olivia Forshee's avatar
    Olivia Forshee 4/20/2021 3:03 PM
I have no problem with this, in fact, I have begun taking my to-go mug to coffee shops and asking if they'll fill it instead of wasting another cup! It makes me feel really good knowing that I am reducing my impact on the planet in as simple of a way as not getting a single-use cup, or straw with any drink at a restaurant!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Olivia Forshee's avatar
    Olivia Forshee 4/20/2021 3:01 PM
I love running with my boyfriend or inviting friends to go biking, hiking, or walking with me. I tend to always gravitate towards the outdoors when I need to decompress. So being active outside with the people I love and care about is the best combination!
