Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Transportation
Use Public Transit
I will use public transit 10 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 3 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

Talk To My Friends and Classmates
I will decide which social or environmental issue in my community is most important to me and tell 1 friends and/or classmates each day about the issue.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Waste

I will keep 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 15 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Melissa Gaviria 11/25/2020 1:43 AMElectricity in Hawaii is very expensive compared to other prices in the United States. Electricity is generated through oil, which goes to show why Hawaii has the highest share of petroleum use in the United States. This impacts the environment, animals, and humans negatively considering that as a fossil fuel, it is one of the most dangerous greenhouse gases and plays a vital role in global temperatures. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Talk To My Friends and ClassmatesWhat makes you feel connected to your campus, your neighbors, or another kind of community in your life?
Melissa Gaviria 11/24/2020 6:39 PMNature allows me to feel connected to my campus, neighbors, and additional communities. I also feel connected to them through common interests and beliefs such as working toward a sustainable planet! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Public TransitThe US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and just 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not? How would you adjust them if you could?
Melissa Gaviria 11/24/2020 6:17 PMThese numbers surprised me because I would have thought everything gets dispersed equally. If I could adjust them I would make the percentages equal to one another. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Melissa Gaviria 11/24/2020 6:14 PMBy investing in a reusable water bottle, we are able to reduce both our carbon footprint as well as the plastic burden on landfills, oceans, and streams. A way I have made this a permanent habit is by thinking about the damage a single water bottle can due to our environment and asking myself: Do I really want to harm our planet's sustainability which is needed for us and future generations to come? No. So I avoid disposable plastic utilities as much as possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsMany people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?
Melissa Gaviria 11/24/2020 6:09 PMFood is medicine. We need organic food not simply just for us, but for the environment as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Melissa Gaviria 11/09/2020 3:09 PMBy walking instead of driving, I am able to pay attention to the nature around me and appreciate it as I walk by. Menawhile, when driving, everything passes by quickly and you cannot truly experience the moment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Melissa Gaviria 11/09/2020 3:06 PMBefore this eco-challenge, I would use straws often without realizing the extremely negative impact that plastic has on our environment. Instead of plastic straws, I have been using reusable straws and reusable water bottles that don't require straws. I've also quit using plastic bags and instead, I carry a reusable bag wherever I go! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Melissa Gaviria 10/17/2020 12:19 AMBy eating lower on the food chain with foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and less red meat, I am able to reduce the carbon footprint of my food choices and impact the planet in a positive way. Eating healthy can also provide more vitamins and minerals within my body, helping me maintain good health and can even protect me from diseases. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Melissa Gaviria 10/12/2020 5:13 PMI would like to invest more time reflecting on gratitude and simply being thankful for the little things such as the air we breathe, the trees, and the oceans. With this, comes working together to protect these environments and keep them sustainable for us and future generations to come.
