Today I got my new toothpaste I ordered. It's small mint like capsules and you bite and add water and it turns to toothpaste. The container it comes in is a glass jar and is refillable. This will cut back on toothpaste waste I'm putting into landfills. I also got a bamboo toothbrush! I'm very excited about this investment.

Today I purchased a reusable coffee cup. I'm excited for how much plastic I'll be keeping out of landfills with using it when going to Starbucks!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

In my family, we invested in sustainable shower heads one year and it became a reoccurring thing we just did. We also transitioned to sustainable light bulbs as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

Practicing gratitude in the morning helps me feel positive and upbeat the remainder of the day. It keeps me motivated to be happy and spread positivity to  those around me. Practicing gratitude also makes you realize how fortunate and blessed you are on a daily basis.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Community Join my Student Government or Local Group
How can your community support inclusive decision making?

I tune into my school government meetings. We have different representatives for different people whether that's for where you live, if you're an athlete, if you're an undergrad or graduate, if you're an honors student, etc. I think it's a great way for everyone to feel represented and/or heard.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Marisol Gonzales 11/08/2020 10:53 PM
I live in an apartment so we pay for our electricity. I did some research to try and find out hoe hour electricity is generated but I was unable to find anything.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

The Hawaii State Department of Health is advising the public not to eat fish and shellfish caught in the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base Fuel Pier and Marina Area, a military protected area within Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Fish caught in this area may contain harmful chemicals. I need to be more aware of where my fish comes from because it's not something I have worried about prior to researching this.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Marisol Gonzales's avatar
    Marisol Gonzales 11/08/2020 10:37 PM
I could incorporate other R's into my lifestyle by being more aware of my waste, what I eat, and what I use on a daily basis.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Marisol Gonzales's avatar
    Marisol Gonzales 11/03/2020 2:17 PM
Walking allows me to be more aware of my surroundings and take it in a lot more then in a car. I'm able to feel the sun, smell the plants, see the flowers on the side, and interact more with my community when walking.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Walk Instead
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

No. Being a student here in Hawai'i, a car is very expensive. I use the bus as transportation or I walk. Living in the downtown are is definitely an advantage.
