I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 30 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Simplicity

Needs Vs. Wants

I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Transportation

Car Share

I will sign up for a car-sharing service or organize car sharing with my neighbors or classmates to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.

COMPLETED

Practice Loving-Kindness Meditation

I will spend 30 minutes practicing Loving-Kindness Meditation to nurture love and compassion for myself and others.

I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Carry my Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Go Paperless

I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use Reusable Bags

If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Food

Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty

I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?

    Jessica Groth's avatar
    Jessica Groth 4/13/2021 5:35 PM
It emphasizes the need to support local, because the damage modern global food systems have on the planet is heavy, as well as often does not provide the healthiest food options. The system also perpetuates cruelty, and the people and animals in local food systems are cared for more and given more individual attention than in mass production facilities.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Work-Life Balance
How might practicing work-life balance lead to a more sustainable life for yourself? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

    Jessica Groth's avatar
    Jessica Groth 3/29/2021 6:45 PM
Work-life balance is hard, but focusing on that can help me be sustainable by giving me the time and mental effort to figure out how to dedicate time to sustainability. Stressing less on work helps clear my head to focus on other things like sustainability.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Meditate
What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

    Jessica Groth's avatar
    Jessica Groth 3/29/2021 6:43 PM
I would definitely like to invest more time reflecting on how to find myself each and every day. In the stress of life I often lose the sense of who I am and what I deserve, and that includes how I think to myself and treat myself. Finding a sense of self in everything that I do will help me to find peace and a sense of drive that I have been lacking.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

    Jessica Groth's avatar
    Jessica Groth 3/29/2021 6:41 PM
Simplicity is not so simple. Actively going out of your way to make life more simple is a hard task, and is one that requires time and effort thinking about how to go about it. Creativity makes thinking of ways way easier, and way more fun as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Carry my Trash
What one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?

    Jessica Groth's avatar
    Jessica Groth 3/29/2021 6:37 PM
Simply consume less. Next time I am asked if I want to go get food, I can say no. I can also emphasize recycling, because I know I can be better about that.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

    Jessica Groth's avatar
    Jessica Groth 3/26/2021 7:07 PM
Less paper makes it easier to organize myself, so it is easy to reduce paper. The next step I can take is to try to buy paper that has been recycled and try to support the companies that invest in green technology
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Jessica Groth's avatar
    Jessica Groth 3/25/2021 4:30 PM
Cooking in, reusing plastic takeout containers when I can, recycling all my schoolwork and packaging I receive, and only buying as much food as I need
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

    Jessica Groth's avatar
    Jessica Groth 3/25/2021 3:18 PM
Often I use a cart to carry all my things out to my car, but often succumb to the convenience of a plastic bag. I have reusable bags, I often forget them- being more mindful of bringing them with can help.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

    Jessica Groth's avatar
    Jessica Groth 3/25/2021 3:16 PM
I get fast food often, which more often than not has single use plastics. If I can try eating in more often, I can reduce my plastic use.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Car Share
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (school, work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Jessica Groth's avatar
    Jessica Groth 3/23/2021 12:45 PM
Yes! Carpooling to school would be easy, considering I live with several of my friends. I already try to do so for certain classes, but I can definitely do more.
