Andrew's actions
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 15 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 20-minute walk outside each day.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Transportation
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Transportation
Walk Instead
I will walk 2 mile(s) each day instead of driving and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Andrew Hallstrom 4/14/2021 8:47 AMI have once again forgotten to keep at this every day, and the end is almost here. However, I think this was a very fun experience. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Andrew Hallstrom 4/14/2021 8:45 AMI don't find myself encountering any barriers in using reusable bottles. It's something I've always done, and I've never really felt hindered or annoyed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Andrew Hallstrom 4/14/2021 8:43 AMI am actively trying to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night. Right now I'm at about 7 hours and 45 minutes, but that average has been going up. -
Andrew Hallstrom 3/31/2021 9:37 AMIt's hard to remember to log on and write about the challenge since I'm so busy, but I'd like to think I'm subconsciously being eco-friendly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Drive LessHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Andrew Hallstrom 3/25/2021 8:07 PMRight now I am on campus, and have no need for a car. If I end up living in a more populated area later on in life, I wouldn't mind biking places. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Walk InsteadHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
Andrew Hallstrom 3/25/2021 8:06 PMRight now I am living on campus, and don't have a car. I walk to class everyday, and walk wherever I need to go. I only drive a car if the trip is more than a few miles. -
Andrew Hallstrom 3/25/2021 8:03 PMThe EcoChallenge for me has been okay. It is hard to remember to do extra things each day due to my busy schedule, but there are already eco-friendly things I do without even thinking about it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Andrew Hallstrom 3/22/2021 8:43 AMI usually tend to not get a fountain drink when I get lunch or dinner on campus; instead, I used a reusable water bottle that doesn't require a straw. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Andrew Hallstrom 3/22/2021 8:40 AMI always tend to reuse plastic bags from grocery stores in many other different ways. I also keep my use of plastic water bottles to a minimum. -
Andrew Hallstrom 3/22/2021 8:37 AMSo far the EcoChallenge has started off a little slow for me, but I'm ready now to contribute more! There's a lot that I do in my everyday life that is good for the environment, so it's going to take some reflection to think of what I can do to help my team.
