Lily's actions
Water
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 10 minutes using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Resilient Powergrids
A community can be brought to its knees without dependable power, often affecting the most vulnerable. I will write 2 letter(s) or email(s) per day to a public official or company to advocate for a more resilient power grid (e.g. microgrids, solar+storage).
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 60 minute(s)
Health
Reduce refined sugar
I will keep track and reduce my consumption of refined sugars, including sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Health
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 60 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 2 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Water
Collect Rain Water
I will create a rain garden or bioswale or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home or dorm room.
Nature
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 3 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.

Lily Hastings 4/15/2021 9:57 PMI changed up my actions a bit to hold myself more accountable since this is my second annual eco challenge with St. Thomas and I'm getting more versed in sustainable swaps. Glad to step up!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm RoomHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future?
Lily Hastings 4/22/2020 9:28 AMI'm in the process of moving into my own apartment right now, and this is a very big concern to me. I have a lot of stuff, and frankly a lot of stuff I haven't even seen in a year or two because it's been packed away. I have to remember that if I've lived without it for more than a couple of months, then it needs to be re-homed. As for collecting new things, I need to stop buying things on impulse but rather think about my purchases and go to the store for what I specifically came for.-
Shayna Thostenson 4/22/2020 3:48 PMRight there with you! It's definitely difficult to downsize and really only keep the necessities. In my experience, it's been harder as I've moved from my parents' home, to the dorm, to an apartment, to my partner's mother's home, and to an apartment again. I challenge myself every few months to go through drawers, my closet, etc. and donate or sell items I do not need.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Lily Hastings 4/22/2020 9:25 AMGoing on the same trend, I'm sure I could try to unplug most of my items that I do not use every day. I also know that using fans instead of A/C units along with keeping drapes closed on windows is easy and reduces energy.
