Nicholas's actions
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Community
Meet My Neighbors
I will meet 3 new neighbor(s) each day.
Community
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Nicholas Hodgkinson 7/31/2019 6:05 PMMy regular trash has only been filling up 1/3 of the way from the prior 2/3. My recycle bin is now filled up 4/3. This is due to cleaning all of my single use plastics and putting them in the recycle. -
Nicholas Hodgkinson 7/16/2019 8:01 PMDoing really good on this challenge. I haven't used a straw in over two months. I also make sure to put the straw back when I am given one so that don't just assume I used the straw and put it in the trash -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Nicholas Hodgkinson 7/15/2019 8:15 PMSomething I can really do is talk to the businesses that I work with and try to educate them on my learning and show them the savings I have achieved with going to two sided printing. I can do this in in our general business passings -

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Take ControlHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Nicholas Hodgkinson 7/08/2019 3:02 AMI think when we take the time to analyze and monitor our own heath it helps u understand how our environment has a play on that. I think when we begin to take an interest in ourselves, we take an interest in that around us. -
Nicholas Hodgkinson 6/25/2019 9:20 PMBeen really getting in with my neighbors again this challenge. Every time I see someone new I remember this activity and immediately go say hello -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsMany people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?
Nicholas Hodgkinson 6/22/2019 9:38 PMyes, local communities can sustain feeding their own communities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Nicholas Hodgkinson 6/22/2019 9:37 PMif I have to purchase a plastic bag, I either properly recycle it or use for my cleanups when I go fishing -
