Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

So far my challenge is going well. I’ve been using my metal water bottle, reducing the use of plastic bottles, using a metal coffee mug, reducing my use of paper cups for coffee, only using cloth bags for groceries and reminding myself everyday, just how happy and grateful I am for the life I have now.

This is inspiring! I always try to do the same and to be mindful of the beauty and nature that surrounds us everyday! I like the update about your challenge! That's a good idea!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I feel much better about using a metal coffee cup, rather than a single use coffee cup.  I know how much plastic is out there, creating environmental issues all over the world and I no longer contribute to that, at least not nearly as much.  That makes me feel a lot better about myself and the contributions I'm making towards reducing our enviromental crises.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

I would install a water filtration system in my house, if I cannot afford that, I would buy a water filter to keep in the fridge.  I would simply refill a metal water bottle and that would eliminate the need for plastic bottles at all.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I tend to forget my cloth bags in the trunk, so in that case, I usually take plastic bags.  From now on, I could just bring all my items out to the car in the cart and then bag them when I get to the car.  As for not forgetting the bags, I could pull them out before I go shopping and leave them next to my purse, so that I won't forget them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

I use plastic bags at the store and could easily buy a reusable cloth bag and eleminate the need for plastic bags.  Instead of using the vegetable bags at the store, I can just place it into the cloth bag and wash that and the vegetables. I can use a metal coffee cup instead of the paper coffee cups.  I can also bring my own to the coffee house instead of using the plastic ones they have there.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

Gratitude is vital in friendships, relationships, and in life.  Without gratitude, we would never show how much we appreciate the things that others do for us.  Feeling grateful towards someone is a part of what pushes us, keeps us motivated, to want to help others the way that we've been helped.  It's the ongoing cycle of "pay it forward".
