  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

The thing that I do the most is keep a carboard box in my car so that if I go to Walmart and forget my bag I can simply just carry everything unbagged in the cart and place it in the box to make trips inside easier. If I go to the store for something small to begin with I just carry it out without a bag especially since there is a plastic bag tax in Chicago now.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

The hardest part of this is the ammount of coffee that I normally have in a single day. I can be a forgetful person so at times if I leave my cup in my car becasue I had already used the cup once I simply take my order in a single use cup. The other issue that I have is keeping the cups themselfs clean. I only have one reusable cup/mug currently and it can be challenging to continuously keep it clean. The simplest thing I will do is start cleaning my cup once every night so that I know it will be clean for coffee in the Caf.

Just about half way through with the ecochallenge. It has been a lot of fun getting others involved and talking about all the changes people have started to make.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Limit Social Media
Social media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?

The largest thing that I noticed almost imediately was that I felt like I had more energy than normal. I was generally more active with those two hours that I was normally spending on social media. Being able to use that time effectively without procrastination meant that I felt like I had more energy and actually had more time for relaxation.

This is my first day of the ecochallenge and I am very excited to start keeping track of all of my habits that are already green and to find new and creative ways to be green through this challenge!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

One of the largest barriers for me is the difference in taste between water in Chicago and tap water in Kenosha. What I have started using is a water filter to get rid of any particles that could come from the tap water and all of the sulfer taste that comes with it.

I just realized how much water I drink each day after I used the water bottle fillers on campus and saw that I saved a little over 10 water bottles today.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Joseph Immordino's avatar
    Joseph Immordino 3/18/2021 7:09 PM
Repurposing would be something that could save the earth and save money. Old containers and jars can be converted into pots for plants with little time and simply some effort.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Joseph Immordino's avatar
    Joseph Immordino 3/18/2021 7:07 PM
The easiest way to accomplish this would be to set up games like spikeball and basketball with my friends to integrate quality time and exercise.

    Energy Power Down the Computer
What are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?

The easiert things I could do would be to stop charging my phone over night so that it does not continuously consume power when I am sleeping. Over time this will add up to a great deal of energy saved.
