Action Track: Building Resilience
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 20 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided below and spend 45 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 15 minute(s)
Simplicity
Disconnect from Email
I will disconnect from my email when not at work or school, using my personal time for endeavors that help me live out my values.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 30 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Support Native CommunitiesIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Jaime Konerman-Sease 4/26/2021 10:31 AMBalance is the key to sustaining life. Excess and deficits in life lead to imbalance, either by relying on too many resources and depleting those resources or by not having enough resources and being unable to live. A global perspective shows that most of western culture relies on an excess of resources, which causes deficits in other areas of the globe and even within our own communities. The idea of sustainability, to continue on into the future, depends on balance to prevent both excess and deficits. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Jaime Konerman-Sease 4/26/2021 10:25 AMBesides powering down electronics, I'm working on using minimal electricity during the day by turning off lights, using appliances only when totally necessary, and trying to reflect each time I use something electric that it requires resources and energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
Jaime Konerman-Sease 4/23/2021 8:50 AMRather than eating while looking at my phone, I placed my phone in another room during lunch. I spent my time thinking, rather than mindlessly scrolling. I left lunch feeling lighter and more aware of my plan for the afternoon of work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Jaime Konerman-Sease 4/23/2021 8:49 AMToday I found conscious moments to not pick up my phone - instead I worked in small increments on ongoing craft projects using secondhand materials. I still find myself reaching for my phone when I'm taking work breaks, it's a hard habit to break!
