this is the trash I collected yesterday while walking through my neighborhood and passed my local golf course. My husband, my dog and I walked for about 2.5-3 miles to complete our clean up assignment. It was sad to see how many plastic alcohol bottles, cans, wrappers, cigarettes, and plastic waste were on the sides of the road and near the course. We found quite a few golf tees too.

I am currently going through a kitchen remodel so I have found it a bit difficult to stay on track with my food waste, and water recycling. I have bought quick foods like salads and chicken precooked so I can have healthy meals. I am doing my best to be sustainable and responsible with my groceries and eating out. I have been eating a lot at a local market up in Ramona where I live. They are better than whole foods in my opinion.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

From my understanding, electricity in San Diego is a combination of coal-fired electricity, natural gas, and combustion sources. I think it can play a big impact on our environment, however San Diego is mild in temperature, so I am not sure just how bad the impacts are.

Today the best thing I did for my eco challenge was being outside most of my day. My kitchen is being completely remodeled right now and today was they day my kitchen was completely out of order. I was able to prep a few meals for my husband and I. I worked on schoolwork outside so used no electricity. I ate my leftovers cold because I didn’t have access to my stove or microwave. My thermostat has been unplugged for 5 days now so I am not using heater or ac at this time either.

Today I have been watching my nephew so I haven’t been at my house. I did ensure at my sisters house all lights were off, thermostat was off and I was able to conserve at their house the amount of energy I used.

Today I was able to reduce plastic waste and utilize my reusable bags for my groceries. I avoided all beef products and got my ingredients for salads. I got organic chicken as well. I plan to go 2 days this week without meat products. I am going to create a 1 day juice cleanse using my juicer. I also used all natural lights today! Fun progress.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

When I find myself needing a bag but don’t have one I still turn the bag down. I carry my items or I put them back into my cart and push them to my car and add them all to my trunk. I always have spare bags in my car so I’d find one when I’m done shopping.

Today I had probably the most productive day as far as hitting all my challenges. I did not use any power all day, I did my schoolwork outside and my laptop was already fully charged. I was able to compost my foods, and also use all-natural light inside my house. I wrote in a gratitude journal, and after cooking I recycled my water to reuse for my dinner dish mess. I plan to take a hike with my dog and then take a cold shower once I get home from that. Happy Monday everyone, I hope you are all having a great start to your week.

What are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?

I have purchased a mini solar panel which charges my phone and my laptop for school. I have been using natural light during the day instead of using power. And I purchased natural soy based candles and use those at night before bed so I don’t have to use lights.

Today I did my gratitude journal and went on a long walk with my dog! I was able to sleep an extra hour this morning so I woke up feeling rested and relaxed for my week ahead! Happy Sunday everyone.
