I was looking through the tasks to see if there were any more I was interested in doing. I found one related to volunteering and coincidently I'm volunteering right now. I'm currently handing out cute little succulents to COS students. I find that I do a lot of these actions without putting much thought into what I'm doing, they just feel like the right thing to do.

I was looking at the actions and was thinking about the sustainable things I do already. The task of carrying around your trash got me thinking about how every day I drink a can of Coke and carry it around all day after it is empty so I can bring it home, rinse it and eventually return it for 5 cents.  I tend to carry around most recyclables until I can recycle them properly.

I completed the conduct virtual meetings task this week. I usually have been providing an online option whenever I host meetings. Not only is it better for the environment to not have to drive to a meeting, it's also sometimes annoying and a waste of time to make a drive for a meeting. Personally, I really enjoy online office hours because I don't have to go to campus at inconvenient times just to ask couple questions. As things get back to normal I hope professors continue to have online options for office hours.

Over winter break I washed my clothes at home in a water-saving washer. This took an eternity, over 1.5 hours just for the wash, especially compared to the 30 mins the washers on campus take. This made me wonder how much water the washers here are wasting? It also serves as a reminder that sometimes being more environmentally friendly can be slightly incoveint. When I do wash my clothes on campus I always do it in cold water, usually due to the materials I'm washing. It's great that continuing to do this will help the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Walk Instead
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

I started having knee issues from overuse of my knees after I spent almost every weekend over the summer hiking mountains. For most of this academic year, I have been avoiding walking to and from class because I couldn't do the 3 mile round trip without pain. A 1.5-mile ride from Perkins to campus is definitely not worth the drive. After a couple of months of physical therapy, I'm excited to start walking to and from class again, and just in time for more daylight and nicer weather!

I have been meaning to switch my bank statements to paperless for a while. I don't even open them because I have access to everything online, so receiving them was such a waste of paper. I'm glad this assignment has finally encouraged me to go paperless! I already rarely use paper. I take all my class notes and do homework on my tablet. Not only does my tablet save paper, but with One Drive and One Note, I have access to my notes and assignments anywhere I have an internet connection. I highly recommend using a tablet for school work, it saves paper and is convenient.
