Douglas's actions
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 5 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Simplicity
Go For A Daily Walk Outside
I will take a walk outside for 60 minutes each day.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 90-minute walk outside each day.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Douglas Levin 10/19/2020 8:54 AMIncorporating the 5 R's into my lifestyle includes a 6th R - Remember!!! What are your options when you make a decision to throw something out... don't forget good will, post something online as a "freebie", make your throw away someone's treasure. It's easy to take a picture and post it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Douglas Levin 9/21/2020 7:02 AMI bring mesh bags for my produce and purchase my seafood and meat directly from the counter providing my own containers for them to fill. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Douglas Levin 9/21/2020 7:00 AMThere are no barriers to the use of my own water bottles. I pack my own sodastream bottled of water for travel and for the day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Douglas Levin 9/21/2020 6:59 AMI've not used a single use coffee cup in a year or more. Dunkin' Donuts refills mugs you bring in... but as of now I have a favorite mug for home that gets refilled several times/day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go For A Daily Walk OutsideFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Douglas Levin 9/21/2020 6:46 AMWalking my dog Max without my phone allows me to disconnect and think, sometimes out loud. It allowed me to completely rewrite a manuscript with a new direction. -
Douglas Levin 9/09/2020 5:55 PMBecause the group that I work with at CES are the folks that I wish to emulate. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Douglas Levin 9/09/2020 5:53 PMMinimizing water use and flushing yet. My issue is with our energy efficient building that flushes automatically after every use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Brush My Teeth Without Running WaterWhat is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?
Douglas Levin 9/09/2020 5:52 PMThere are two main aquifers.. one at 180 feet that smells of sulphur (Iron rich) and another at 400 feet, which is where my well reaches. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Douglas Levin 9/09/2020 5:51 PMSince working at home, some days I might be able to elect to not take a shower.... but I better brush my teeth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Douglas Levin 9/09/2020 5:49 PMI walk every morning and I look up, down, and all around. I see the birds and the squirrels... today a deer jumped in front of us while we walked...
