I will organize Ecochallenge.org's discussion course 'A Different Way: Living Simply in a Complex World' with my family, friends, co-workers, or classmates.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Community
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.

Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.

Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Water
Collect Rain Water
I will create a rain garden or bioswale or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Community
Help Others
I will offer to help 1 person(s) who are in need each day.
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 30 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 30 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Lucy London 4/30/2020 7:57 PMTHRRRRIFTING is the best and makes me so incredibly happy. I love all the weird clothes in thrift and consignment stores--it's really how I express myself. I don't like to follow the crowd, so I really don't shop at department stores or malls. I also like to wear hand-me-downs because I have some awesome older friends that give me clothes:)) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
Lucy London 4/30/2020 7:55 PMI can taste food more! I can enjoy the smell and look of it, as well as the knowledge of where it came from, how it came to be on my plate. It's really an amazing, joyous experience that I get to have every single day. I am so grateful to the universe for giving me good food! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Lucy London 4/30/2020 7:53 PMI've started biking for exercise, and it's really amazing. I live in a beautiful place where I can ride out country roads and see all the marvelous hills and farmland and cows. Sometimes I ride with friends, which is a great way to connect with them and with nature and with my body all at once. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Lucy London 4/30/2020 7:52 PMThere's so many wonderful things to perceive! All my senses come alive--not only sight, but smell, and hearing, and even feeling fun plants or the wind. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Lucy London 4/30/2020 7:50 PMThe California wildfires were and are a huge factor in the health of my community. The first major time they hit in 2017, my school was cancelled for a week due to the poor air quality, and many of my friends were evacuated. The sun was red and I couldn't breathe. As someone with asthma, these fires, worsened by climate change, affect me and my community directly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Lucy London 4/30/2020 7:48 PMTurn off lights, take shorter showers, drive electric vehicles, fly less, eat less meat, etc.
~and~
Restore our sense of awe & humility
Widening our paradigm from individual to encompass all life
Remembering our meaning as stewards of the Earth -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Heat and Cool NaturallyWhat are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?
Lucy London 4/30/2020 7:45 PMHeating, rooftop solar panels, smaller solar panels to power devices, and enjoying the sun as it makes us happier, which in turn aids sustainability! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Lucy London 4/30/2020 7:41 PMRicher countries colonize land. They pay for forests to be deforested to expand farmland for agricultural production to feed the capitalistic system and our greedy carnivorous society. Not only is most meat production unjust for animals, but it is also a huge contributor to greenhouse gas emissions because of land burned and logged for the purposes of farming, and the unsustainable farming practices that capitalism demands. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Learn About Renewable EnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Lucy London 4/30/2020 7:34 PMEnergy is a gift--it's such a miracle. To think we've come so far as to create electricity and stuff that powers cars and planes and boats and trains! It's incredible. Now, we have to be humble about it. Our current energy is not clean--not sustainable. Therefore, in order to sustain the Earth so that humans and millions of other species continue to survive, we must make a just transition to clean and renewable energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Organize a CourseHow can you use Ecochallenge.org programs to help mobilize your community to take action toward a sustainable future?
Lucy London 4/30/2020 7:30 PMEcoChallenge has some amazing programs that I hope to continue to use to spread insight about sustainable practices and also just living more simply in complex times.
