This doesnt have a lot to do with going green, but one of my goals on here is "helping others". I really do try to help people every day. It isnt just for this campus challenge thing. I've always been this way.

But last monday, nov 4th, you may have heard about a death on campus.
She was my friend and despite what some other people may call her, her name was Sammi. I wont go into further detail.

My point is, you dont have to add it as a challenge on here, but if you can, please reach out to anyone who might need help. It can be as small as holding a door open for someone to letting someone cry on your shoulder. Everyone needs to be shown that there are people who care.

And if you need help, please reach out and dont suffer in silence.

In your opinion, how do social inequalities diminish a strong sense of community?

    Liam Lubitz's avatar
    Liam Lubitz 11/03/2019 2:31 PM
Social inequalities spark prejudices in people. Racial, gender, and wealth inequality, mainly are the things that kids pick up on as they grow up based off of the life that they were born into. These prejudices make people think they are better, or less than someone else because of something they are or have and diminish people to the thing that they are being discriminated for.
I cant even begin to tell you how many homeless people I have come across in nyc who I thought should have more than what they do because of they pure talent they have. But all that most New Yorkers see is another obstacle in their daily commute.
Seeing people called stupid or being discriminated against for anything at all makes me so mad. Everyone is smart in their own way. It doesn't have to be the same kind of intelligent that you have. That's why I like listening to people who need to be listened to because it's a chance for me to learn something new, and geez, it's a chance for them to be able to speak without being doubted.
I dont know if this answerd the question but I guess my point is, social inequalities pull people apart worse than high school cliques.

I legitimately took a 5 minute shower  which was really hard for me because showers have been a coping mechanism and a way of relaxig for me for years. But I did it by
    A. Doing everything as quick as possible
    B. Thinking of all the things that I want to get done today
    And
    C. Thinking of the other ways I can de-stress while doing those things (I'm gonna go ahead and get lost in a Harry Potter audiobook. I'm almost done with Order of the Phoenix and I have the next one ordered on Libby!)((sidenonte: save yourself from buying books, ebooks, or audiobooks, and either go to your local library or at  least get a library card and access Libby which is a completely free e and audio book library app for your phone and computer. This has been a psa))

    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Liam Lubitz's avatar
    Liam Lubitz 10/30/2019 6:47 AM
I can get my family to stop using plastic water bottles. They've already voiced how over priced they are and half the time I see them getting thrown out with half of the water still in them (my brother mainly, takes a sip then leaves it. It's an OCD habit that he has always kind of had which is why a reusable with his name on it or something might be better)

I can also try and break my own habit of getting too much water to drink from the fridge, then pouring the rest out. I can just take the cup with me in my room and stay even more hydrated.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

    Liam Lubitz's avatar
    Liam Lubitz 10/20/2019 9:19 AM
If I'm in dire need of a bag I will use one but I'll shove all the items i can into it.
Often times, stores also have boxes lying around that they used for shipping the products so those are actually more sturdy than a plastic bag if I have a lot of items!

To prevent the use of the bags in general, I could just bring reusable totes with me when I go shopping. Right now I don't shop much but when I do start living on my own, that's what I plan to do.
ALSO A PSA FOR PEOPLE WHO USE REUSABLE BAGS AT THE GROCERY STORE:
Don't forget to wash your bags! It is easy for them to collect germs and bacteria on the bottom. You're putting your food in these so make sure they're clean!

I haven't been able to keep up with my challenges within the past few weeks as I have been sick. But I'm feeling better now and ready to go! I'm also gonna set some reminders O.o
I added a few challenges because when I initially scrolled through them, a few stuck with me and I've been applying them without even really thinking. Like I printed a 13 page paper 2 sided because I saw it on here and realized that it WOULD save a lot of paper! And I have been asking not to have a bag when I go to the drugstore because I understand that I'm only going to the car with my few items. I never really thought that these simple actions could do so much but in all actuality, that's half the paper than what would have been used, and if everyone had that mindset for plastic bags, there would probably be less in the ocean.

How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Liam Lubitz's avatar
    Liam Lubitz 9/30/2019 4:14 PM
I can take my sister's dog for a walk (he needs more leash training anyway) in the park area near my house!
(I actually tried to last week but someone was flying a drone and the poor dog practically dragged me back home, he was terrified)
I wish I could work out with, or be competitive with my friends, but they don't have an interest :/

    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

    Liam Lubitz's avatar
    Liam Lubitz 9/27/2019 11:57 AM
Creativity is necessary for practicing simplicity because to live simply, you need to improvise a lot.
For instance, if you need something, but you don't have it, but you have something similar to that thing, it is good to have a creative mind to be able to use one object as multiple!
An example is that in my room, I have a folding table that I use as a desk. It provides me more space than a regular desk so that I can do artwork. I never bought this table though, I found it in the basement at my grandma's house and she told me I could use it! It is a part of my lifestyle now.
Or that I needed something to hang my headset (for video games) so I re-purposed my old guitar stand to do the job.
In fact, I hardly bought anything new when I moved earlier this year because I just took the things other people didn't want, and made them work for me.

How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

    Liam Lubitz's avatar
    Liam Lubitz 9/26/2019 2:16 PM
Practicing gratitude, or general positivity, keeps me motivated by keeping me out of a negative mindset.
Yeah, I do still get days where I can't get out of bed or I just cant get started. But instead of saying to myself "you're being lazy" and mulling over it all day to feel worse the next day, i tell myself "it's okay and you'll pick it up tomorrow full force" and then give myself a well needed break (and then actually work harder the next day).
Talking kinder to yourself really does change how you function.
