Bennett's actions
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Waste
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 120 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 60 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

Bennett Macchiarella 12/16/2021 4:42 PMToday I worked on my composting technique; collecting kitchen scraps, making a mini compost bin, as I have no other space outside to use. I also did some extra credit on composting and gardening and learned a lot about sustainability and using compost and its benefits.

Bennett Macchiarella 12/06/2021 5:53 PMpreventing recycling contamination I learned to empty and wash out containers, never place grease in disposal, plastic bags do not belong in recycling bins interestingly I did not know this, and never to dispose of batteries in a any type of recycle bin. Some of the most common contaminants are leftovers, disposable coffee cups which I had always placed in a recycle bin before. Plastic bags are the worst as they jam the recycle machinery as does shredded paper which I did no know. Using less plastic bags is preferred. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Bennett Macchiarella 11/27/2021 10:35 AMI have learned that composting has a lot of water volume. This is a huge benefit in many ways such as reducing the erosion, and establishing vegetation. It will take me a few weeks to compost. Composting is not a quick project but takes a while. I am also learning about the different foods that you can add to compost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Bennett Macchiarella 11/27/2021 10:29 AMthe biggest challenge for recycling for me are the plastics because they are not biodegradeable.
