Jolene's actions
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 60 minute(s) each day.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Food
Whole Food Lifestyle
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Waste
Carry my Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 60 minute(s)
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 120 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
-
Jolene Miller 11/24/2021 7:04 PMthis challenge has showed me that i don't usually do as many eco-friendly things as i thought, but it always reminds me to keep trying to better my habits. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Jolene Miller 11/14/2021 12:59 PMDIY using clothes you already have, make art, write a story, try a new hairstyle, make a pinterest board -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Jolene Miller 11/14/2021 12:57 PMThey play a key role in our environment, supporting the plants that we use as food. without them we could not exist. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Jolene Miller 11/14/2021 12:51 PMI think that pollution is the biggest problem for york, since the water from the faucet is virtually undrinkable. I'm sure it contains lots of heavy metals and other contaminants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Jolene Miller 11/14/2021 12:50 PMI already incorporate refuse into my life a lot- at the dining hall they give you disposable cups, straws, and silverware with your takeout, and every day i get takeout i ask to not have the extra stuff so i don't produce more waste than necessary. same with grocery bags given to you at checkout. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Carry my TrashWhat one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Jolene Miller 11/14/2021 12:25 PMThe inconvenio=ence stands in my way of making this a habit. It's not the easiest thing to carry around a giant mason jar to give to the Starbucks barista to fill up, but maybe I could carry around a container that is less likely to break. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Jolene Miller 11/14/2021 12:23 PMI could certainly buy my eggs free range. I usually don't because they're so expensive, but if I think about how much I value the welfare of animals, buying eggs from farms that keep their hens in cages that are smaller than a sheet of paper is not the best move. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Tend a GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Jolene Miller 11/14/2021 12:22 PMWhen I went backpacking for the first time, I felt such an appreciation for nature and how much more I love being in the woods where it's quiet. it made me realize that being in a big city makes me feel restless and anxious, while being in nature is so calming and so beautiful. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Jolene Miller 11/14/2021 12:19 PMI often delete social media for a while, start feeling better without it, get fomo, and redownload it again because I'm afraid of what I may be missing out on. But, social media always makes me feel terrible and is a huge waste of time. So, one of these days, I'm going to swear off of it entirely.
