Macey's actions
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products
I will spend 15 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home or dorm room.
Health
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 15 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Waste
Carry my Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Help Others
I will offer to help 3 person(s) who are in need each day.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Community
LEARN ABOUT TRANS, FEMME, AND NONBINARY EXPERIENCES
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the experiences of trans, femme, and/or nonbinary people.
Community
Host A Watch Party
I will host a watch party to screen a documentary about an issue that matters to me.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Participant Feed

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Audit Toxic Cleaning ProductsTo what extent do environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:43 AMEnvironmental factors contribute to health in multiple ways. One way would be directly through pollution or water contamination. Another could be more indirect such as lack of access to various resources. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn More about Food ApartheidWhat can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:40 AMA community that lacks nutritious food will have a higher risk of chronic disease. These diseases include cardiovascular disease and diabetes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Host A Watch PartyWhat did you learn about in the documentary you watched? How did it make you feel?
Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:39 AMThe documentary we watched opened my eyes to cyberbullying and suicide rates. It was a documentary about two girls that were involved with young men on the internet and one was murdered and the other committed suicide due to the events that occurred. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:37 AMPeople that live outdoors or spend the majority of their time outdoors are most effected by environmental degradation. They are also the most likely to be aware of the problems within the environment. They are affected because they have a hard time finding clean water and food that isn't contaminated. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:35 AMSome factors include (but aren't limited to) being around cigarette smoke and air pollution. I live outside of Chicago and the air pollution isn't nearly as bad as the city but it still isn't great. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:34 AMI have learned that there are numbers on each recyclable item. The numbers correspond with the composition of the item and whether or not it can be recycled or thrown away. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:33 AMIt is really difficult to understand the impacts we have on the environment and animals when we don't directly see the changes occurring. However, taking a trip to a national park or being able to see time-lapse photos of some areas can increase the awareness of people. This challenge has helped me to understand this, especially when I visited the waste management facility. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:32 AMI use straws and plastic bags a lot. But I recently bought more tubber ware and reusable straws! Not only are they super cute but they are great for the environment since they won't be going in the garbage. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:31 AMWhen I went to take my MCAT, I was required to put my belongings a plastic bag that the facility provided. I suppose in order to save bags, you could minimize what you absolutely need to bring into the facility. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Carry my TrashWhat one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?
Macey Montavon 3/26/2021 6:17 PMOne thing that I realized while doing this task, was that I could make a to-do list on my phone to limit my paper waste. Another thing I could do would be to drink water from a reusable water bottle, rather than a plastic disposable water bottle.
