COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Building Resilience

Support Local Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Carry my Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Personal Waste Audit

I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Prevent Recycling Contamination

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Go Paperless

I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Compost Food Waste

I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

COMPLETED 5

Use Reusable Bags

If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

COMPLETED 5

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Audit Toxic Cleaning Products
To what extent do environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?

    Macey Montavon's avatar
    Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:43 AM
Environmental factors contribute to health in multiple ways. One way would be directly through pollution or water contamination. Another could be more indirect such as lack of access to various resources.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?

    Macey Montavon's avatar

A community that lacks nutritious food will have a higher risk of chronic disease. These diseases include cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Host A Watch Party
What did you learn about in the documentary you watched? How did it make you feel?

    Macey Montavon's avatar
    Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:39 AM
The documentary we watched opened my eyes to cyberbullying and suicide rates. It was a documentary about two girls that were involved with young men on the internet and one was murdered and the other committed suicide due to the events that occurred.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Who is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?

    Macey Montavon's avatar
    Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:37 AM
People that live outdoors or spend the majority of their time outdoors are most effected by environmental degradation. They are also the most likely to be aware of the problems within the environment. They are affected because they have a hard time finding clean water and food that isn't contaminated.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Support Pollution Reduction
What environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?

    Macey Montavon's avatar
    Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:35 AM
Some factors include (but aren't limited to) being around cigarette smoke and air pollution. I live outside of Chicago and the air pollution isn't nearly as bad as the city but it still isn't great.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

    Macey Montavon's avatar
    Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:34 AM
I have learned that there are numbers on each recyclable item. The numbers correspond with the composition of the item and whether or not it can be recycled or thrown away.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

    Macey Montavon's avatar
    Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:33 AM
It is really difficult to understand the impacts we have on the environment and animals when we don't directly see the changes occurring. However, taking a trip to a national park or being able to see time-lapse photos of some areas can increase the awareness of people. This challenge has helped me to understand this, especially when I visited the waste management facility.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

    Macey Montavon's avatar
    Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:32 AM
I use straws and plastic bags a lot. But I recently bought more tubber ware and reusable straws! Not only are they super cute but they are great for the environment since they won't be going in the garbage.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

    Macey Montavon's avatar
    Macey Montavon 3/29/2021 10:31 AM
When I went to take my MCAT, I was required to put my belongings a plastic bag that the facility provided. I suppose in order to save bags, you could minimize what you absolutely need to bring into the facility.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Carry my Trash
What one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?

    Macey Montavon's avatar
    Macey Montavon 3/26/2021 6:17 PM
One thing that I realized while doing this task, was that I could make a to-do list on my phone to limit my paper waste. Another thing I could do would be to drink water from a reusable water bottle, rather than a plastic disposable water bottle.
