REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Katy Morin 11/26/2021 4:09 PMOne thing I can do to help my community becomes more sustainable is become a more serious beekeeper. This will help local bee populations and provide locally and ethically sourced honey to the community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Support Native CommunitiesIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Katy Morin 11/26/2021 3:58 PMBalance is important to sustainability because that is how sustainability is reached, it's the essence of sustainability. Balance ensures long term survival, that everything is in relation to each other. That the bonds between all the working parts of an ecosystem are strong. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Learn About Renewable EnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Katy Morin 11/22/2021 3:34 PMWhat inspires me to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues is quite frankly that if I don't then environmental harm will continue to happen to us in the present and in the future. And, if I don't do something, who will? I like to set examples but taking steps to tackle issues like transitioning to renewable energy by advocating for it and learning about it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?
Katy Morin 11/22/2021 3:32 PMFood sovereignty addresses the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems by giving more control to the average person. It also helps tackle several environmental issues such as a lack of biodiversity on farms, gives people control of pesticide use, and can help improve wages and working conditions for farmers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Katy Morin 11/15/2021 12:23 AMThe people most affected by the topic I researched, Moloka'i ranch, are Hawaiians. Development has increased on the 55,000+ acre area that is obstructing access to important cultural places for Hawaiians. While there has been come success in that regard, most of the land is irresponsibly maintained, leading to environmental degradation that harms native wildlife. Now, the fight is about making sure the land is properly taken care of, a fight that is led mostly by native Hawaiians. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Katy Morin 11/09/2021 2:05 PMCreativity is a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity because it's something new that you have to true. In order for it to happen you have to think outside of the box and be willing to try many things -
Katy Morin 11/05/2021 5:44 PMBefore I started the 'reuse water bottle' challenge I actually didn't even carry around a water bottle with me. I just only drank liquid at meals (which was usually twice a day because of my meal plan). But because of this challenge I now carry one around, and have been drinking more. I don't feel any different, but my mouth is definitely less dry! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Use Reusable BottlesWhat are some of the needs that water meets or benefits that water provides for you?
Katy Morin 11/05/2021 5:41 PMWater benefits me by keeping me alive. It's the substance that makes up our bodies the most, so ensuring I carry around a water bottle is good for my health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Katy Morin 11/05/2021 5:40 PMPeople in richer countries eat more meat than those in less wealthier countries because they can afford to pay for animal meat. Animal meat takes a lot of space, time, and money to raise. But, current ways of producing and consuming animal meat are unsustainable. The rate at which cows, for instance, eat grain and other feed is large enough to feed the entire food insecure population of the world. Cows also drink up a ton of water that could be used to help people or the environment, and the waste from farm creates dead zones in the ocean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Katy Morin 11/05/2021 5:38 PMWith the money I saved now washing my clothes with cold water I plan on using it for food and other basic expenses,
