  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Who is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?

    Rylee Mory's avatar
    Rylee Mory 4/25/2021 7:22 PM
Farmers are a large community that is affected by environmental degradation and irresponsibility. These actions increase climate change, which leads to extreme weather conditions such as floods and droughts that greatly damage crops and their form of livelihood.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?

    Rylee Mory's avatar
    Rylee Mory 4/23/2021 2:11 PM
Food sovereignty ensures the appropriate ecological, social, economical, and cultural framework is met. However, food sovereignty is often overlooked in modern global food systems, as mass farming of both animals and crops overlooks many of these framework aspects in pursuit of capital growth.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Rylee Mory's avatar
    Rylee Mory 4/23/2021 10:28 AM
Thrifting clothing is a great way to express your personality while keeping sustainable values in mind! These stores have such a diversity in styles and clothing, so each person can use what they find for a unique look, while keeping clothing out of landfills.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Rylee Mory's avatar
    Rylee Mory 4/22/2021 12:26 PM
One service I discovered is the pick-up of large or oversized items to dispose of by your local waste service. Additionally, many gently-used furniture or household items can be picked up by local non-profits such as the Habitat for Humanity Restore to be reused by others.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Core Values
What are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?

    Rylee Mory's avatar
    Rylee Mory 4/22/2021 12:23 PM
Some of my core values are Authenticity, Compassion, and Justice. These are a few of many values I hold, but I believe these are the top three. These values encompass and are used to address many global issues, including environmental concerns, racial inequality, economic inequality, and gender inequality.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Rylee Mory's avatar
    Rylee Mory 4/22/2021 12:16 PM
Pollinators are an essential piece of the natural ecosystem and are a key factor in producing healthy plants and crops. Without pollinators inseminating plants across the globe, biodiversity would decline leading to the extinction of vegetation and animals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Collect Rain Water
Trace the water that flows down the drain from your house to the largest body of water nearby. What is the route it takes?

    Rylee Mory's avatar
    Rylee Mory 4/22/2021 12:12 PM
Water draining from my household and the surrounding area all eventually ends up in the Mississippi, the closest large body of water.  The community as a whole should be mindful of this, as every pesticide, chemical, and contaminant that we may use will in time find its way into this natural resource.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Support Native Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

    Rylee Mory's avatar
    Rylee Mory 4/22/2021 12:09 PM
Happy Earth Day! Balance is greatly important to sustainability, as it is essential to maintain and protect the resources of the Earth. Without balance, certain resources would be depleted, and unable to grow and exist as they once did. The key to obtaining sustainability is creating a circular structure that takes into account all aspects of the environment and life and treating them as equal causes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
A recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?

    Rylee Mory's avatar
    Rylee Mory 4/18/2021 3:26 PM
The best way to address the systemic racism faced by Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) is to continuously use your buying power to support and promote them. To combat issues such as increased difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts, individuals can write letters to national and local representatives, and donate to support these businesses.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Track my Purchases
What have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?

    Rylee Mory's avatar
    Rylee Mory 4/18/2021 3:21 PM
When tracking my purchases, I find I am more able to determine the areas of excess and unessential spending. Personally, my largest areas of spending each month are related to food, both for groceries and going out to restaurants. I am inclined to shift away from going out to eat, and instead to spend more money on groceries each month, where the same amount of money will buy more meals.
