Sami's actions
Action Track: Building Resilience
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Transportation
Conduct Virtual Meetings
I will not travel for meetings and will instead conduct them virtually.
Transportation
Use Public Transit
I will use public transit 5 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Simplicity
Disconnect from Email
I will disconnect from my email when not at work or school, using my personal time for endeavors that help me live out my values.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 30 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Collect Rain Water
I will create a rain garden or bioswale or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Health
Joyful Movement
I will spend 60 minutes doing an activity where I'm both moving my body and enjoying myself.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 5 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Sami Neilson 4/22/2021 9:26 PMThis week I have been staying at a hotel for a tennis tournament. I think it is so easy to be less mindful when staying at a hotel of the electricity that is being used. I make sure that everyday before we leave to our matches we turn all the lights off and have the air conditioning off so that we aren't wasting energy while we are away. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Sami Neilson 4/06/2021 12:50 PMThis week it has been a lot warmer; instead of turning on the air conditioning, I opted to open up all the windows and allow fresh air to circulate throughout our home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Sami Neilson 4/06/2021 12:49 PMThis weekend I was home for Easter and became more aware to turn off the lights that were not in use. -
Sami Neilson 3/25/2021 6:08 PMThe eco-challenge is going great! I have seen a difference in my sustainability habits. Looking forward to seeing how my impact will make a difference in the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Collect Rain WaterTrace the water that flows down the drain from your house to the largest body of water nearby. What is the route it takes?
Sami Neilson 3/22/2021 10:02 PMWhen it was raining a few weeks ago in San Diego, my roommates and I collected rain water so that we could use it to water our plants indoors.
