Community
Express My Support
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Conor OKeefe 10/09/2020 8:00 PMThe biggest barrier for me is work, because they provide free bottled water and do not have a way to easily refill a water bottle without taking a break. I'm going to get a massive water bottle to bring to work, so I can last between breaks without needing a refill. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Conor OKeefe 10/09/2020 7:59 PMI use K-Cups when making coffee at home. I'd like to get a coffee maker that does not use them since the reusable cups do not work, but since we already have a Keurig I'm looking into getting compostable cups next time around

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Conor OKeefe 10/09/2020 7:57 PMI personally just go really fast in the shower, I waste no time at all and just do what needs to be done. No time spent singing to myself or doing shower dances I just get in and out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Conor OKeefe 10/09/2020 7:57 PMMy energy usage is actually a lot lower than those around me, because I tend to avoid the thermostat at all costs. I have system of when to open and close the windows in my home to maximize heat in and cold out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Conor OKeefe 10/09/2020 7:55 PMI honestly have no idea how electricity is generated where I live, but I would assume hydroelectric power is a big factor what with the Mississippi river -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Conor OKeefe 10/09/2020 7:54 PMMy biggest issue is that my house is right next to a Moka, so the temptation is there pretty often to go get a cup, since their coffee is much better than mine at home, but it ain't too bad to have a mediocre cup of coffee
