Stone's actions
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 25 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Support Resilient Powergrids
A community can be brought to its knees without dependable power, often affecting the most vulnerable. I will write 3 letter(s) or email(s) per day to a public official or company to advocate for a more resilient power grid (e.g. microgrids, solar+storage).
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
LEARN ABOUT TRANS, FEMME, AND NONBINARY EXPERIENCES
I will spend 25 minutes learning about the experiences of trans, femme, and/or nonbinary people.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided below and spend 15 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Host A Watch Party
I will host a watch party to screen a documentary about an issue that matters to me.
Waste
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 18 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 3 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 6 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 10 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Advocate for More Food Options
I will advocate for local and/or organic food options at work or on campus.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
-
Stone Parker 11/27/2020 9:29 PMmy eco challenge is going well. I really see the difference in being more sustainable on a daily basis. as of right now I have saved over 500 plastic water bottles entering a landfill. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Stone Parker 11/16/2020 8:11 PMI could use a better job in refusing. I usually do not pay attention what type of bag the store clerk uses when bagging my item. so using less plastic bags is what I could work on. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Stone Parker 11/16/2020 8:10 PMI would personally use my hands and carry it to my car. but a system that could work to insentavise not using plastic bags is to charge more for plastic bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Stone Parker 11/16/2020 8:08 PMon a daily basis I use either my backpack or my yeti to carry things or liquid. Using these reusable items is good for the environment and lessen plastic waste -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Stone Parker 11/16/2020 8:03 PMwhat I have noticed about what im throwing out is majority unrecycleable. I will use the compost to grow a garden in my backyard to grow fruits and vegetables. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Stone Parker 11/16/2020 7:58 PMtwo sided printing can be implemented into schools would be great for the ecosystem. Where we should start is the principle of each school mandating it school wide to promote a sustainable ecosystem -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Stone Parker 11/16/2020 7:56 PMthe only items that are recyclable in my area are plastic bottles and aluminum cans. things like plastic bags and items that aren't in bottle form are not accepted at my local recycling facility. The most difficult part of recycling is the storage of items in my personal space. I do not want to go to the recycling bin every time I'm done using an item so waiting until my bin at home is filled up is tough because it attracts pests -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Stone Parker 11/16/2020 7:51 PMfor my own health I have moved to a water only diet when it retains to liquid intake. I use a Yeti Gallon jug which saves about 6 plastic bottles each day. it makes me feel good because my Yeti with the right care can last me my whole lifetime as a water bottle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Host A Watch PartyWhat did you learn about in the documentary you watched? How did it make you feel?
Stone Parker 11/16/2020 4:46 PMWatching the documentary it made me reflect a lot about myself and how I look at life. Being a person of color I learned a lot about how my ancestors were treated and glad everything is now better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Support Businesses Owned by People of ColorA recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?
Stone Parker 11/16/2020 4:44 PMA way that you can work against systemic racism is by calling forward officials of color to add diversity in government and to add a new perspective in government to change things for the better.
