Waste

Prevent Recycling Contamination

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 60 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

Compost Food Waste

I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

Use Reusable Bags

If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

I have reached out to two companies to reduce packaging. I might need to follow up. Overall, participating in this challenged has reinforced my commitment, and doubled my actions.

This is good one if you use more than one paper towel after washing hands https://fb.watch/547NQRYqor/

I am so proud of our community-especially our  students at St. Kate’s. When I read their activity, I feel motivated to do more.

I agree! It has been so motivational to see all of the actions members of our community are taking.

This challenge is close of my heart as I care deeply about our people and planet. It was shared by our student sustainability group and I am thankful for students to inspire me to join the challenge. With our university's social justice and env. justice commitment, this is a perfect way to share actions, inspire others, learn from other, and make a positive impact.

    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

I am collecting compostable food waste, etc. and using the city compost collection facility as the drop off location is on the way to my work and chores travel.

Today, I contacted Sara Lee Bread as they sell at Sam's Club (2 loaves of bread together). https://saraleebread.com/node/656/done#confirm. They have one plastic packaging over each sliced loaf and then another plastic package to sell them together. Unnecessary packaging? What do you think?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

In a cart is the best answer for me as I have to drive to a store to shop. The nearest store is about 5 miles from my home. Every store has a cart or shopping basket, it is easy to move the items from cart to car without using a bag. This question had me really thinking.
