REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Research Restorative JusticeHow can Restorative Justice help foster the well-being of both people and planet?
Felicia Peterson 4/25/2021 3:36 PMActions plans can lead to preventing harm or repairing damaged environments. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Heat and Cool NaturallyWhat are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Felicia Peterson 4/23/2021 5:25 AMYou only see what's on the shelves and know what you can afford. You benefit when an item or service is lower cost. The thought of actively hurting other humans, animals, and lands isn't at the forefront.
This challenge encourages me to be more thoughtful about shopping. Since I feed myself on my own, I only go grocery shopping once every other week and avoid going to Target/Walmart/Amazon-related stores to divest my money from systems that most likely have environmental issues riddled within it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?
Felicia Peterson 4/21/2021 7:12 PMFood sovereignty allows those who are local, the producers on the land, to actually benefit from the global market. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity LEARN ABOUT TRANS, FEMME, AND NONBINARY EXPERIENCESHow is equality for trans, femme, and nonbinary people important to a just and sustainable society?
Felicia Peterson 4/20/2021 10:32 PMWhat's the point of having a sustainable society if we do not sustain the people who live in it? Who are we sustaining for, if not all? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Felicia Peterson 4/20/2021 9:26 AMI try to unplug items that are off, such as lamps, that was it does not quietly leech energy out of the socket. I also avoid charging my phone overnight because my model only needs an hour or less to charge, not eight hours. I can put my phone on airplane mode and charge it in the morning as I am getting ready for my day. Plus! It helps the battery life of the phone. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Learn About Renewable EnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Felicia Peterson 4/20/2021 9:25 AMMinnesota's weather has been more and more unpredictable. I feel that the timing of the seasons is now off. If you talk to local farmers, they can tell you that temperature, precipitation, and patterns are changing too quickly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Felicia Peterson 4/19/2021 11:46 AMI will continue to pay my Macalester College tuition. After that, I want to subscribe to the Criterion channel. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Felicia Peterson 4/19/2021 11:45 AMXcel Energy Center tries to use wind and hydro-electric sources, but if demand surges, they switch to oil and gas. Extracting oil and gas displaces humans from their homes and disrupts the ecosystem for animals. To some extent, wind and hydro-electric do, as well.
