Manuela's actions
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace, dorm, or elsewhere on campus.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Mindfulness Practice
I will spend 20 minute(s) per day practicing Mindfulness.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Practice Loving-Kindness Meditation
I will spend 5 minutes practicing Loving-Kindness Meditation to nurture love and compassion for myself and others.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Joyful Movement
I will spend 60 minutes doing an activity where I'm both moving my body and enjoying myself.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 2 conversations.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 20 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Waste
Zero-Waste Period
Every month menstruating women throw away pads, tampons, applicators, plastic, and paper packaging. Using a menstrual cup cuts out all this trash, while also eliminating possible toxins from tampons. Menstrual cups are a cheaper choice in the long-run and also more hygienic than any other menstrual product. I choose it because I believe that every woman/transgender male that menstruates should use the cup over any other menstrual product.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or organize car sharing with my neighbors or classmates to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Food
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Food
Zero-Waste Cooking
I will cook 3 meal(s) with zero-waste each day

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Manuela Pin Sanches 11/24/2020 9:44 PMIt makes me feel great and I will try to find a way to get companies to stop sending mail to people who used to live in my house as we receive more from those than we do directed at us. The only mail I receive is from the bank and hospital occasionally. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Launch a Recycling ProgramHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?
Manuela Pin Sanches 11/24/2020 9:42 PMThinking creatively can help us find different innovative ways to be more sustainable, reduce our waste and find a better solution to cope with our current waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Manuela Pin Sanches 11/24/2020 9:40 PMToday, after almost 10 months of collecting recyclables, we went to a recycling place where we separated cans and plastic bottles like shampoo, detergent, soap, and similar big bottles to be recycled even though they do not return money for such things. We also found out that we can give them bottle caps to recycle which is better than throwing them into normal trash. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Joyful MovementWhat's your favorite activity(ies) in which you experience joy while being active and moving?
Manuela Pin Sanches 11/24/2020 3:56 PMI love running around the Ala Wai which is a new thing I started doing and it brings me a lot of joy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Core ValuesWhat are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?
Manuela Pin Sanches 11/24/2020 3:55 PMMy top five core values are: Reliability, Honesty, Commitment, Loyalty, and Consistency. I asked my friends what they think are my core values. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Practice Loving-Kindness MeditationHow can practicing Loving-Kindness Meditation be helpful to the health of the environment?
Manuela Pin Sanches 11/24/2020 3:51 PMWe started going to a Buddhist temple to learn how to meditate and it actually gives me more energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Mindfulness PracticeWhat best helped you with your Mindfulness Practice? How does Mindfulness keep you grounded and sustain your work with compassion?
Manuela Pin Sanches 11/24/2020 3:49 PMI think we are constantly eager for the future and future events but instead we should focus oh here and now and appreciate every moment, no matter how small. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Engage In Active ListeningWhat was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?
Manuela Pin Sanches 11/24/2020 3:48 PMIt did change my vision on something I used to judge before and it's good to be more open minded. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Tend a GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Manuela Pin Sanches 11/24/2020 3:47 PMYes, arriving in Hawaii and going on hikes has definitely changed my perspective on life and on things I should be thankful for. -
Manuela Pin Sanches 11/15/2020 6:14 PMI think it is going pretty well but it could be better. I have been trying to cook more and eat more fish than usual. Besides that, I have been spending more time outside as well and watching less TV.
