Maile's actions
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Simplicity
Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Community
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 5 conversations.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 60 minute(s) each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Maile Riedel 3/22/2021 4:58 PMIt is difficult to understand, because once we throw something away, we no longer think about it. Out of sight out of mind. Carrying your trash with you forces you to see your impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Engage In Active ListeningWhat was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?
Maile Riedel 3/21/2021 11:00 AMUsing active listening allows us to learn more about the people in our lives and how they feel. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Core ValuesWhat are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?
Maile Riedel 3/20/2021 7:33 AMHappiness, health, relationships, growth, and respect. I believe that these five things are some of the most important aspects of our life. When I get stressed or in over my head, I can loop back and ask myself, "Does this make me happy? Does this support my health? Does this build a positive relationship with someone else? Does this help me grow? And, am I showing myself and others respect?" -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Maile Riedel 3/20/2021 7:26 AMYou could invite a friend to workout with you, exercise outside, or incorporate a mantra into your routine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Maile Riedel 3/18/2021 6:04 PMI either carry things out with my hands or accept the bags. However, I always recycle the bags in appropriate recycling containers. -
