REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Royal Riedinger 11/24/2020 1:17 AMI believe spending time outdoors is great for the mind and spirit because it takes you away from the many distractions of life that may be holding you back from realizing what you are truly capable of. Nature has a certain healing element to it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Enjoy the Sunrise/SunsetFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
Royal Riedinger 11/24/2020 1:16 AMI believe sunsets and sunrises are beautiful occurrences of nature that we can always depend on for a reminder that time is fleeting and beauty is found everywhere. May as well appreciate it while we are here. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCreate Your Own Action Forage for My FoodPeople are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations are just a few examples. What is your chief motivation for foraging?
Royal Riedinger 11/24/2020 1:14 AMI picked a starfruit off a tree and it tasted much fresher due to the nature of its untouched deliciousness. If it was easy, I would prefer to grow and harvest my food so I know it's safer and fresher. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Royal Riedinger 11/24/2020 1:13 AMMany people are so incredibly wasteful when it comes to water usage, they either lack education or they simply don't care. Locally, people are probably using too much water by showering often due to many of us going into the ocean a lot. Globally, people are eating food that uses a lot of water, showering too long, using a dishwasher religiously, etc. To improve the health of water systems, we should become mindful of these issues and adapt to a more sustainable set of choices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Brush My Teeth Without Running WaterWhat is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?
Royal Riedinger 11/24/2020 1:07 AMLiving on an island, there are many aquifers and underwater wells that supply much of the water for us. There are also many different drinking water companies centered on Oahu that clean and sanitize the water, either for drinking or for household usage. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Work-Life BalanceHow might practicing work-life balance lead to a more sustainable life for yourself? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Royal Riedinger 10/29/2020 9:33 PMI believe practicing a work-life balance promotes your general mood, which boosts creativity and motivation. I believe being in a good mindset promotes giving and having a new appreciation for life, which can be easily put towards being sustainable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Use Reusable BottlesWhat are some of the needs that water meets or benefits that water provides for you?
Royal Riedinger 10/15/2020 9:23 PMWater is the ultimate life force. Not only do I consume it on a regular basis, but I use it for most basic forms of hygiene and cleanliness. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Royal Riedinger 10/12/2020 3:16 PMI believe that choosing to remember the aspects of my life that make life more enjoyable is important for keeping a positive attitude as well as being motivated to get more out of life's opportunities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Royal Riedinger 10/12/2020 3:12 PMI believe thrifting is the best way to shop and get rid of your clothes. It is much better for the environment to recycle clothes by passing them down and repurposing them, rather than trying to buy something that is only fashionable for a little while and then throwing it away. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Reduce refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Royal Riedinger 10/07/2020 3:24 PMI certainly have a sweet tooth. After I accepted this challenge, I didn't notice much difference until the evening, that's when I really started to crave sugar. As long as I don't cave and eat a bunch of sugar before bed, I usually feel much better waking up in the mornings. I am going to continue this trend for as long as I can and hopefully it gets easier.
