Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Hi all! I hope you all are having fun with this challenge and continue strong for the last 4 days :) Ends on April 15th!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

    Alyssa Rodway's avatar
    Alyssa Rodway 4/11/2021 8:27 PM
It is increasingly difficult to understand our impacts because we are so far disconnected at this point from where our waste goes. This challenge has impacted my future consumption and choices by forcing me to be more aware and to truly reflect on my own impacts.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Alyssa Rodway's avatar
    Alyssa Rodway 4/11/2021 8:26 PM
What concerns me most is that I don't think most people fully grasp the long-term effects of anthropogenically-sourced environmental degradation. With my thesis project, I hope to help bridge this gap and get people thinking about these issues for more than just when they're choosing to use a plastic straw or not.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Practice Loving-Kindness Meditation
How can practicing Loving-Kindness Meditation be helpful to the health of the environment?

    Alyssa Rodway's avatar
    Alyssa Rodway 4/11/2021 8:18 PM
By allowing ourselves to take meaningful, relaxed pauses that benefit our own well-being, we can then meditate on how to be better for ourselves and the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Advocate for Greener Vehicles
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

    Alyssa Rodway's avatar
    Alyssa Rodway 4/11/2021 8:17 PM
I already drive a Prius, and I love the gas mileage. I think this is one of the best ways to advertise these types of vehicles, because they save you money in the long run.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Alyssa Rodway's avatar
    Alyssa Rodway 3/23/2021 8:03 PM
We rely on pollinators to keep nature flourishing and beautiful, and we rely on a lot of them for the functioning of our agricultural system. With our increasing population, we cannot afford to lose any large number of pollinators, or our food supply will continue dwindling relative to our population.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    Alyssa Rodway's avatar
    Alyssa Rodway 3/21/2021 8:41 PM
There are no personal barriers to me using a reusable bottle at this time. It is a permanent habit for me already.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Alyssa Rodway's avatar
    Alyssa Rodway 3/21/2021 8:41 PM
I already incorporate the R's into my life a lot, but something I would like to do more often is reusing my trash (e.g. plastic, yarn leftovers, etc.) to create.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

    Alyssa Rodway's avatar
    Alyssa Rodway 3/21/2021 8:40 PM
I love Berry's assertion. Celebrating the little things in life, even the ones that happen every day is so important. Living our lives alongside the seasons is the way it's meant to be, and can help keep us grounded and aligned.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

    Alyssa Rodway's avatar
    Alyssa Rodway 3/21/2021 8:39 PM
Practicing gratitude keeps you thankful every day. Maintaining thankfulness is key to a happy life, and allows you to see the value in not just the big things, but the little things in life as well. This, in turn, can give you more motivation to help work for a better world.
