Britt's actions
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 15 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Help Others
I will offer to help 2 person(s) who are in need each day.
Transportation
Conduct Virtual Meetings
I will not travel for meetings and will instead conduct them virtually.
Transportation
Advocate for Greener Vehicles
I will spend at least 10 minutes assessing the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on fuel-efficient vehicles.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Nature
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Community
Host A Watch Party
I will host a watch party to screen a documentary about an issue that matters to me.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 50 minute(s) each day.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Tend a GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Britt Shaw 4/21/2021 8:16 AMI visited Redwood National Park a few years ago and was just in awe, not only at the enormous trees but also the rich soil. I am from Arizona, and our soil is powdery and tan. Only native plants can be planted directly in the ground, and even that is a bit of a stretch sometimes because the soil is compact and poor. In the Redwood forest, the soil is dark, rich, spongy, and smells amazing. As a gardener, it was amazing to be in such a rich alive place as the Redwood Forest.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Host A Watch PartyWhat did you learn about in the documentary you watched? How did it make you feel?
Britt Shaw 4/04/2021 7:58 PMI watched the documentary 13th. It really made me think about our current system of justice, and it reshaped how I think about prisoners in the U.S. I feel frustrated about the injustice in our country and motivated to learn more and support change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Britt Shaw 3/24/2021 12:38 PMI am so glad that we are able to bring our own bags to the grocery store again. As much as I try not to get more plastic grocery bags, sometimes it is simply impractical to make twelve trips carrying everything with my hands. When I do have to get plastic grocery bags, I will reuse them many times until they break. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Britt Shaw 3/24/2021 12:34 PMI am learning to prioritize exercise in the midst of an academically heavy schedule. Working out with a friend helps keep me motivated. Even if initial motivation is low, I always feel great after! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Britt Shaw 3/16/2021 3:22 PMI try to only use single-use plastics for raw meat. For storage of other foods, I have switched to reusable Tupperware. I even convinced my roommate to pack her lunch using Tupperware instead of plastic baggies. It is better for the environment and on our budget. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Britt Shaw 3/15/2021 9:40 AMI am trying to have 1-2 meatless meals per day. Going full-on vegetarian all at once is not something that I am motivated to do nor do I think is a long-term habit that I could keep up. However, I meal plan every week, and I think that this small, intentional step in the right direction can really make a difference if I can make it into a good habit. It will be good for the environment and good for me! -
Britt Shaw 3/09/2021 10:37 AMI went to the Little Italy Farmer's Market this weekend and supported local farms/businesses while getting high-quality, delectable food for this week. I got some of the best hummus and apple cherry cider I have ever had!
