Louise's actions
Waste
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 90 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
I will spend at least 15 minutes using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 90 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Louise Smith 3/17/2021 12:23 PMThe biggest barrier for me is just timing. I tend to use single use cups when I get coffee, since I don't have supplies for making it in my room. I also tend to drink more tea than coffee. When I get coffee, I used to bring a reusable mug with me but with COVID, that is not a possibility right now. However, I can go to the store this weekend and get supplies. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Louise Smith 3/17/2021 12:20 PMCurrently, the barriers are more along the lines of Covid Restrictions. Some water fountains on campus are not outfitted to refill water bottles and those are closed for use which can make it difficult.
I am working to make this a permanent habit and my only struggle will be not losing track of my bottle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Get Involved in the Water Justice MovementWho is affected by polluted water or a lack of access to water in your region? How are they affected?
Louise Smith 3/17/2021 12:15 PMSince Kenosha's water comes from Lake Michigan and is not inherently polluted at the source, the risk comes more from personal plumbing and pipe issues. This affects the lower-income population more since they tend to live in buildings that have not been updated or cared for as much as higher-income housing.
Corroded/corroding pipes can lead to copper and lead contamination, both of which can cause serious medical issues, and these levels are not measured on a personal level (unless the homeowner does so privately) so oftentimes people don't know they are consuming contaminated water.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Louise Smith 3/17/2021 11:50 AMPracticing gratitude can help with focusing on the good in the world around me rather than worrying about the negatives. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Louise Smith 3/17/2021 11:47 AMSince the weather is getting nicer, I can invite other people to come on a walk with me either downtown or just around campus. I have also heard about some fun hiking trails in the area that I would like to try out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Louise Smith 3/17/2021 11:45 AMAs someone who always wakes up at the same time no matter what, I am just making sure that I have done what I need to do and am cutting back on time aimlessly scrolling through tiktok and pinterest lol. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Louise Smith 3/17/2021 11:44 AMWhile I am not sure of Carthage's energy usage overall, I can make sure that I am not using electricity unnecessarily by unplugging devices when they are not being used, keeping my blinds closed when the sun is not out, and layering clothes vs. turning up the heat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Louise Smith 3/17/2021 11:39 AMMaking sure that appliances are off when I am not using them and turning off the lights in my room when I leave. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Online Energy AuditWhat most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint? What changes did you make or will you make?
Louise Smith 3/17/2021 11:38 AMWhen going around my dorm room, there are obviously changes that I cannot make or look into, such as insulation. However, I do make sure my Keurig is always off and that my chargers are unplugged if I am not using them. I also use the "curtain trick" where I keep my blinds open when it is sunny and close them if it is not in order to block heat loss (The oaks only have single pane windows). My roommate and I also found a severe draft from our door leading to the hallway and will be blocking it with a draft blocker. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Louise Smith 3/17/2021 11:30 AMIn Wisconsin (2019), 42% of electricity was produced via coal, 34% from natural gas, 18% nuclear power, and 8% came from renewable sources (hydroelectric, wind, biomass, solar, etc.).
